Y2 teachers - shocking end of year data

I'm getting a bit worried about submitting data as it is looking so low in writing :(

Maths - around 70% expected or exceeding
Reading - around 60 % expected or exceeding
Writing - around 50-60% expected or exceeding

I'm starting to freak out - is everyone looking at terrible results?

My school is 95% EAL, mostly children from Roma Gypsy backgrounds, some of whom speak very little English.
Our year 2 reading SATs results were 27%. Yup, 27%
I can't tell you how much I'm dreading KS2 results day, I might just leave the country.

The expected/exceeding is that based on how the child has learned over the year, or is it based in some sort if arbitrary government target?

Arbitrary made up assessment system which was rolled out in spring.

House anxiety - I started another thread on this - I'm not sure we're even going to be 50% for writing. I am still feeling quite unsure about where to judge quite a few children. I am being moderated on Thursday - might just say to him that I'm really not sure can be please put me right.

Don't think I'm going to be much over 50% on reading or maths.

Can I butt in as well please? My DDs head has sent a letter out stating that due to the new criteria etc, they are not expecting many children to hit the targets, especially 'exceeding' as the government are wanting children to learn things approximately 1-2 years earlier than they have been. Does that sound about right?

I think this is a nationwide issue. I am trying not to worry about it. I warned some of the parents at parents' evening that they may well be told that their child is not meeting expected standards by the end of the year, but that I'm not worried about their progress and neither should they be.

Sorry to butt in to your teachers' thread. Mine are only in Y1 and I'm panicking. They're bright and hardworking but I don't have a clue what their reports will say. I feel sick. I can't even imagine how it feels for you teachers.

I as a parent am so sorry that teachers are stressed about meaningless targets. Parents just want their kids to do as well as they can, and to be taught by a caring, competent, enthusiastic teacher.

It makes me so sad. Telling parents that their children are failing. When you see how much progress they've made, it is just crazy.

I'm year 6, but results are far from where I'd like them to be - it's so demoralising and makes you feel like an utter failure. Apart from the fact the whole thing is a stupid farce. Had to re-submita child's writing today with evidence of a dash. Yes, he failed at moderation because the person looking at his work couldn't find a dash. He's got a bloody load of them in the work I submitted today. What an utter farce. Am just hoping this year is the year everyone knows was a badly cobbled together farce. Makes me want to walk out of a job I love. I want children to be proud of the huge progress they make, the confidence they gain. Grrr.

Mine is worse:
Writing around 40%
Maths around 50%
Reading around 70%

Glad it's not just me thinking it looks awful. I think the figures are fair given the step up in expectations but it just doesn't do the children's hardwork and progress justice!

I think we'll get low results too. I don't teach Year 2 but we've been moderated and have been told that we don't have enough evidence for children working at greater depth, and that the SATs results don't count for much. We submitted video evidence of a child reading an 'expected' level book from a list given to us by the LEA, and were told it wasn't showing the child as expected because they shouldn't be reading a book they're unfamiliar with. This is a child who also achieved a very high score on the reading test. There's also some confusion over PM benchmark levels... It's so confusing, and so unfair on the children.

I'm so confused about the writing. The advice on what constitutes independent writing has come out so late and is not clear to me. My writing levels are way lower than my maths and reading. My levels now compared to last year are
G&T - working at greater depth
3c/2a - expected
2b/c - working towards
It's just the punctuation and spelling that is letting them down.

Was moderated last Thursday. Was reassured by the moderator saying that his school's data is only going to be about 50-60% and that's in a very middle class area.

We are about 45% for writing :( which is really sad considering most of my class's writing would have been judged at 2b or above if we still had levels.

I just hope that schools have been accurate in their judgements and have not tried to do a 'best fit' judgement. Data needs to be low for there to be any chance of anything changing (not that I think there will be any dramatic change but a move to 'best fit' would be good.

Mine is similar. I think the writing is low because of the spelling expectations. Children who write well but struggle with spelling (but are close or phonetically plausible) can only get WT. It's a crying shame. We tell them to use their phonics and to sound things out but the accuracy required for expected is developmentally above a lot of 6-7 year olds. Add dyslexia into the mix and it just seems like we're setting them up to fail.
