Returning to UK from Oz. job prospects???

There is a very, very slight chance that I might end up back in England for 6-12 months. I trained in England and taught for four years before we moved to Oz. We've been away for 18 years and I've worked full time as a Primary School teacher for all of that time.
Would I stand the slightest chance of picking up work? How much supply work is really available and what does it pay? Anything else I should know?
Thanks in advance. It's not likely to happen but could be an interesting proposal. Fairly flexible on UK area.

Have a look on TES website. I would say the likelihood of finding work depends largely on where you will be living.

Agree with Happy - it will depend entirely on where you are in the country. Anywhere in the South East (and no doubt plenty of other areas as well) you will get your hand bitten off and you'll be able to take your pick of jobs. There's a significant teacher recruitment crisis round here as so many people have decided that working 60+ hours a week is a mugs game and have either left teaching altogether or have decided to do supply as that lets them do the bits they like (teaching) and not all the other time consuming paperwork.

Thanks for the information. Please can you tell me what wages are like now for a classroom teacher and also what the daily rate is for supply? When I left it was 17000 pounds a year. Hope you've had a payrise!

I'm also a primary teacher and we are going back to the UK soon. We were supposed to be going back a couple of years ago and so I registered with a couple of agencies and they didn't leave me alone! I even had people from other branches asking me to move to their area instead.

Salary is tricky as there is no longer a national pay scale so x years teaching doesn't equal x amount of pay. This might help though www.tes.co.uk/jobs/salarySearch.aspx?navcode=101

No idea about supply rates I'm afraid

Gosh!! That was rather a shock! I'd be earning exactly half what I earn in Oz. May need to look at supply agencies and see what the rate is, although I'm not very likely to come back. It's an interesting exercise, I know food is cheaper in England than here but I'm not convinced that it justifies halving my salary.

Thanks for that! Leads to some complex calculations on living costs vs income. It also seems that teachers conditions are much better here. Think we will stay put and just come back for a holiday.
Many thanks to all who responded.
