The Hunger Games for a 10 year old

DD has come home asking for permission to read The Hunger Games as it's in her school library and year 5s can borrow it.
I was a bit Shock at this but it got me wondering if it was a book commonly suggested for 10 year olds in schools.
What age is it available for in your school?

It isn't. I also don't recommend it,...although I know at least one of my Year 6s has read it. Several have seen the films. Their parents make the choices in that respect. We don't supply these at school.

However, I had to make a copy of "Angela's Ashes" disappear. Not even sure how that made it into our school library. Hmm

I wouldn't recommend for a year 5 and it isn't in our library. DD1 has been studying it this last term but she is in year 8 so the children are 12/13.

I wouldn't recommend it either, though a lot of dss mates read it last year in Y6. The film is a 12 so if she's Hmm then perhaps suggest that she saves it for next year when she will be 11, giving her time to read it before she sees the film

Thanks. I've said no for now but have agreed to reAd it and then decide. Dd has now said it is for the year six only but her literacy teacher suggested it.

My dd read this in year 6 as did most of her friends. I read it first though and whilst it is a bit violent I thought it was pretty amazing so she read it after me at the same time as me

Interesting, my DD(10) is desperate to read book / see film and I have always said no. However, a lot of her friends have apparently done both - glad to hear I'm not the only one who thinks its a bit much for a 10 year old!
