Gin and a thick skin?! Grin

Depends on primary or secondary but:

I'm sure they do little anecdotal type books about silly things kids have said - he'll need some humour for the coming year.

In terms of stationery, just the normal stuff I'd say. Definitely some post it notes in various sizes (some of the little page marker ones were invaluable when doing final portfolio).

Highlighters, you can never have enough of those as a teacher. Also, because you end up making your own resources, some decent colour pencils and pens?

Mini bulldog clips.

A decent bag (plus a fold up one for extra marking that always lands on a Friday).

Erm... Other than that just the usual stuff!

HTH!

White labels. Small and medium sized, great for labelling the plastic wallets when you have got some evidence for portfolio.

Actually, I'm assuming there will be a portfolio, it's been twelve years since I trained Confused

A4 laminator and paper cutter. You can get them from tesco and are a lifesaver when making resources at home!

The school will laminate stuff as well.
I'd recommend gin.

a book called "getting the buggers to behave"
A bag for carrying resources
stickers - I teach teenagers and they love stickers
pens personalised with 'stolen from Mr X' so the kids don't walk off with them - well actually they still will but it is hard for them to deny you handed them out.

Definitely don't give him anything stationary-he will need to lug it home every day ;)

The best thing I have is a non-spill coffee mug-perfect for keeping hot drinks hot for hours :)

I am training to be a secondary teacher at the moment.
I want comfy, warm lounge wear for being up all hours in comfort, afternoon tea with my dh somewhere nice (we have been like ships in the night and he has had a tough year health wise), gin and posh chocolates.
That buggers to behave book is on my wishlist too, especially after yr9 yesterday Blush
