Times tables

Just out of interest, what is the time scale for learning times tables in primary school?

I'm a secondary school teacher but have a child in year 2. Looking for someone in the know!

My DS is in yr 3 and we recently received a letter explaining that the children are expected to know all their times tables by the end of yr 4.

That's the expectation in the new NC, and up to 12x.
It used to be 2, 5 and 10 for Y2; 3, 4, 6 for Y4 and all by Y5. Including inverse operations and applying the knowledge of tables to solve other calculations and problems.

This is helpful. Thanks so much. X

What has worked well for my daughter is 2, 5 and 10 - Year 2. 3, 4 and 6 - Year 3.
7, 8 and 9 - Year 4.

Will do the same with dd2 unless told otherwise by the school

My DS is in year 1 and they are working on 2, 5 and 10. His teacher is very keen on emphasising there is no time limit to get them learned.
As a secondary maths teacher I wish they would try to get them learned as soon as able. We still have so many kids coming through that are not secure - and it has a real knock-on effect.

Of my Y2 class (top set!), all know their 2x, 5x, 10x and 11x, most know their 3x, some know their 4x and 9x and a couple are learning their 6x!

The earlier, the better!

lots of y2's start y3 thinking they know 2,5,10,3 and 4 times tables.
very few actually do.
they can count-up in 5's but can't answer the question what is 7 times 5 in less than 2 seconds (the guideline target in the Sep 2014 new maths cirriculum). virtualy none can divide at speed.

We recite times tables.
Counting up in 5s, etc is knowing a number sequence, not a times table.
We are working on instant recall of the 2x, 5x and 10x.
