Would you PTS in this situation?

My dear old puss is 13 and last year he was diagnosed with suspected bowel/lymphatic cancer, until a couple of months ago he was stable on half a steroid tablet a day.

About 2 months ago he started grinding his teeth and as I was aware this is a sign of pain I got him a vet appointment and they felt he needed a dental. After several hundred pounds worth of blood tests they agreed he was fit enough for surgery, on operating they found a suspect lesion on the roof of his mouth which we had biopsied and it proved to be benign. Post surgery he developed an infection and needed 3 courses of antibiotics and it became increasingly difficult to administer them as he got angry and aggressive. We have also had inappropriate toileting despite 2 litter trays and no difficulty using them.

So here we are £1,000 down, and he is grinding his teeth again and we were told that he wouldn’t be able to have standard painkillers due to the steroids and he has weed on the carpet again this morning.

The vets I knew well and trusted in our practice moved on just before lockdown, and I am so unsure what to do, we can’t go into the practice and I don’t think I can have a proper discussion in the car park WWYD, sorry this is long 😢

So sorry to hear about your cat. Normally I would suggest having a discussion with your vet and taking their advice on before making a decision. But yes, given what you’ve said and the fact your cat is in pain with little chance of relief, I would seriously consider it maybe best to pts. 😢

Thank you for your kind words, my boy went peacefully this afternoon after becoming very unwell during the night. The vet was one I hadn’t seen before, but she was lovely and so kind and my husband and I were both able to be with him. I discussed everything with the vet and she was absolutely convinced we had reached the right decision, he was so weary and started to slip away before she finished the first injection.

Poor boy - it does sound like you threw everything at him and gave him every chance possible .
But yes , the pain he was in, his reluctance to take medication and the fact he was weeing outside his tray if he's always been a clean cat ....they all point to the inevitible decision.

You were able to be there fir him to the end .

And ( something I learned when I had to have one of my guinea-pigs PTS ) Euthanasia means Good Death

A good life for your pet , if you can follow up with a good death ( I know it isn;t always possible ) then you;ve done your job as a Cat Serf , admirably .
