The litter tray

Old and stressed

Our cat is approx 20 years old and has just started peeing all over the house.

We have just had some roofing work done and she clearly didn't think much of the noise/scaffolding etc, so has been stressed. Thankfully that has all been completed now and the house is back to normal so things should calm down.

She's never liked litter trays preferring to go outside, but we have put a couple in the house and she is using them occasionally. So far though, even since everything has quietened down, she has still wet my son's carpet and our bath mat.

What can we do? (apart from keeping the carpet cleaner handy) Any suggestions gratefully received as I don't like her feeling that stressed and I don't like walking through soggy carpet.

Sometimes, cats are doing this to "punish" you. For a long holiday, for a weekend alone... the cat might be punishing you for all that noise and people around. When did you finish the works? Is it more than a week? But wow, 20 years is a lot even for a cat.

It's about a week now that the works were finished so we are hoping that this will be coming to the end of it.

And yes, she is the cat that keeps on going. Her fur is beginning to fall out a bit and she can't groom herself as well as she used to, and she's lost some weight but otherwise, you wouldn't know she was so old.

Yes, stress can cause them to pee in the house. The litter trays are a good idea, even at her old age. Try to keep her out of the rooms that she's been peeing in, as she can probably still smell the aroma. Have you tried a Feliway plugin diffuser? That might calm her down. Has she been to the vet recently for a check up - you never know, there might be something lurking?

I would take her to the vet's for a check up - at least for renal disease and cystitis. It could be stress related cystitis given the building works.

Her annual check up is just about due so that's good timing for once....although she gets so stressed by the trip to the vets, that won't help much either.

We are her 3rd owners although she's been with us 15 years so she can be quite sensitive over stuff......
