Changing cats food

Hi,

Following on from my other post, we've met a lovely cat and he'll be coming home this evening.

From what the lady said he's a fairly easy going boy. She said he wasn't fussy about litter but she had him on gravelly stuff. And that he liked Felix wet food and any dry food would be fine. He likes Dreamies!

But I'm conscious that Felix isn't a good quality food and would like to change this over. I've bought him his usual Felix for now but how long should I leave it before switching and should I mix new with old gradually?

Dry food, I picked up some James Wellbeloved for now...it said grain free so I'm assuming this is a decent one?

He's around 5 but only been in the shelter for about 3 weeks so they had limited info.

Any help appreciated

Congratulations on getting your new fur baby : )

Regarding the cat food you are correct, whiskas, Felix wet food is terribly poor quality, it actually only contains about 4% meat content, the rest is fillers & artificial ingredients. I first started researching these supermarket brand foods when my cat appeared to be getting fatter & fatter yet she wasn't eating much to warrant the weight gain. Anyhow I changed her food & the improvement has been great, no more loose smelly stinky stools, her breath isn't smelly anymore, her teeth are in better condition, huge benefits, although the new food I now feed her isn't as cheap as the whiskas/felix. This food is just like chicken in a tin, it's actual meat & she loves it. I buy it in bulk from Zooplus.

I've bought both the Cosma & almo nature & they are both a good quality cat food with approx 75% meat content which is fab.

These biscuits are great, they contain only meat & vegetables, award winning brand, not cheap but one big bag lasts me about 6 months & ive figures that the healthier my cat is, that probably equals less vet visits.

It's lovely to read that you are taking an interest in buying healthy pet food, most people have no idea how terrible the supermarket brand stuff is, I read an article on how poor quality it was & that was it, I started the long painful transition ( she refused to eat the new stuff at first )

My cat unfortunately suffered from crystals & I only realised when it was almost too late & she nearly died, that resulted in an operation which was very costly.
After my research I found that feeding cats lots & lots of cheap dried food can cause these crystals.

So what's why I took it upon myself to do my research thoroughly, like you've mentioned no one seemed to be able to give me any advice re good food, but I guess it makes sense that almost natural food with 75% meat content is going to be a lot healthier than giving poor quality food with only 4% meat and full of artificial ingredients.

I will try to find the article re the supermarket brand foods & post link. It is disgusting, I actually felt sick, the tiny bit of meat that these brands do use is from carcasses and holds no nutritional value at all. We are talking animals heads, roadkill, probably carcasses that are diseased or have tumours etc.... honestly it's grim.

Well done on looking to feed your kitty a lot healthier : )

messybeast.com/cat-food-industry.htm

Read the bit : where does it come from.

This isn't the only article, I found loads re how poor quality brands like whiskas & felix were....

Absolutely grim. I get that not everyone can afford to feed their pets luxury food but fortunately for my cat I can.

I felt sick after reading that 🤢

Please note that article was printed in the US... but it was pretty much the same stuff I read re the UK supermarket brands too.

This is the Cosma nature, chicken .... huge difference to the the supermarket stuff.
My cat eats 2 tins a day ( small tins ) it's very filling due to the protein/ meat content
