The litter tray

Can you teach a cat to bury wee/poo properly?

One of our cats doesn’t know how to bury her litter properly. She also happens to be the one with the stinkiest poo!

She does try, but she scratches all around the litter tray, including the floor around it, but missess the poo/wee that needs burying.

The entire house ends up smelling when she has a poo as its left uncovered lol. And the litter doesn’t clump up when she wees, so when I’m cleaning it lots of little soiled bits end up mixed in with the rest of the litter, which are other cats dont like.

We have enough trays for all the cats, she’s never been able to get it right bless her.

I have tried to cover it myself (with a scoop) with her watching, thinking it will teach her but I dont think it has lol.
Anyone have any ideas?

Some cats don't bury properly. I've read that it can be a way of saying "F you!" to the other cats in the house and trying to establish dominance.

We had a tabby female who never buried her poos and she definitely saw herself as the alpha female. They were also the smelliest poos of any of our cats.

Some cover. Some don't. It's just one of those things. I'm pretty sure there is nothing you can do to 'teach' them.

You could always buy one of those expensive automated litter boxes that cleans the litter every time it's used. That's all I can think of as a suggestion.

My tabby never has done either! And now the younger one is copying her so that’s that. I have to take it out as soon as it’s done.

I refused to cat sit a friends cat when she is away as her eldest cat wont use a litter tray or go outside, it shits the floor, usually the bathroom & I am not cleaning up cat shit every day.

She thinks he does it under protest. She started keeping him inside when she moved house and she thinks he was protesting that.

Any ideas with that one?

It really is disgusting. I have stopped staying there (we often invite the other to stay) as I can't face the piles of shit in the bathroom & kitchen daily.

Harry digs a hole, stands in it and goes on the edge...

I think he’s past help!

My old cat would dig a hole for it, then sit in the hole and poo on the floor Hmm

He wasn't the smartest, bless him!

Pink that made me laugh..Ernie digs a really big hole, as in he's there for ages and most of his legs disappear when you are watching him...then he deposits it on the edge. Sometimes it;s pot luck it rolls into the hole. He's good at covering though, too good I have to go searching
