The litter tray

Having kittens- should I get 2 boys/2 girls or 1 of each

Or does it not matter at all?

I will soon acquire two kittens from a litter. I chose to have two so they will always have company but am not sure if I should get 2 of the same sex or one of each.

Do any of you cat veterans have any advice? Is there a particular combo that goes well or am I being catsexist and it really doesn't matter!!

I don't think it matters really, you'll need to be on the ball with the neutering if you get one of each though.

Ooh squee! We will of course need pictures as soon as you get the new arrivals! I have a girl and a boy, not siblings but have always been together. They are not best of buddies but they rub along quite well together. One thing I wasn't prepared for was the play fighting, having only ever had single cats before. It freakd me out so much I started a thread on here and was reassured it was quite normal!Grin

We got two girls and I seriously wish we hadn't!! They cannot get on it's awful, fighting, hissing, screeching at each other Confused then got told its better to have male/male or male/female

We have 2 males - still seem to get on (only 5 months old though). Vet said males make better pets but don't know if that's just because we were told they were 2 females when we got them!

Yeah the fights can look brutal but no harm has come to either of them

I had two girls. They fought as kittens and ignored each other as adults cats.
Two boys or boy/girl.

Both neutered at 6 months.

what i would do is ask the owner of the kittens which two are the most bonded because those are the two that are probably going to stay bonded, other than that either two boys or a boy girl combo, because two girls sometimes get older and you have a battle for top cat on the other hand weve had two girl cat sisters whove come into out rescue that are like one cat with two heads they are that bonded not helpful i know but from kittens to adults you cant predict how they will turn out

I agree with going for the two that are the most bonded.

My old cats were brother and sister, and never really cared about each other, although in old age Old Boy was protective of girl cat and lost weight when she died.

With my new kittens I thought we had a brother and sister. It turns out they are brothers and live each other very much. It's so sweet that they snuggle up together to sleep and follow each other around. Knowing how bonded they are I now feel bad that we only intended to bring home one kitten.

Two brothers. Boy cats in general are much easier going.

Had a brother and sister for 18 years: they tolerated each other and co-existed happily enough.

Now have 2 brothers - they are 18 months and love each other. They play, wrestle, tackle the garden and rampage around the house like a pair of hooligans then collapse on my knee ( see picture)

We've got two sisters. They just about tolerate each other!

We have a brother and sister. While they do not live in each other's pockets, they get very stressed if separated (like one goes to the vet's on their own)!

The only disadvantage with boy/girl is when they reach sexual maturity....Blatant seduction! Still, that is all behind them now and they are back to being friends!

I would say 2 boys, I have 2 sets of brothers, and they get on better with each-other than anyone else. I also have 2 sets of sisters, 1 pair are indifferent to one another, rarely cuddle, the other set, cuddle every now and then.

I say boys as they are, generally speaking, much more friendly towards their human, more laid back, but it is just as important to neuter them otherwise you will have spraying problem, but this is just as likely with one of each, and obviously the kitten issue you may face with 2 girls.

Here is our 1st set of boys, with their proud Mummy in the foreground.

I must admit if I was to get a new kitten it would be a boy or 2 boys just because the last few I've adopted were completely lovely (still miss them) but I have had lovely girls as well. My current 2 are sisters I've had for 13 years and they hated each other. Only in the last few years have they got over this and now sleep together in a bundle.

But each cat is different. My only advice is to sit with them and pick the ones you fall in love with Grin

My preference would be two boys but that's just because that's what ours are and they get on so well!

Two boys are best I think. Neutering is cheaper and less invasive and they tend to be less temperamental. I'd always had girls before but now I have two boys and there really is a difference. They will be lovely whatever you get.

I do have a girl as well but she is a different breed and isn't as friendly with the other cats though she tolerates them.
