Cat having eye removed - advice

My cat has chronic glaucoma and we have been advised that he needs to have his eye removed. He goes in tomorrow.

He is approx 16 years old (not sure exactly but I got him in 2003). He is normally very lively and affectionate. He lives mainly in the kitchen, I can't really let him have free run of the house as he marks/wees everywhere even though he has been neutered. We also have very young children who given a chance would be a little too much for him. He has free access via a cat flap and we live in a fairly quiet cul de sac. We also have another cat who is 12.

Has anybody any advice to how we can help him adjust and live a quality life.

He'll still have sight in the remaining eye?

My mum's fairly elderly cat had his eye removed and adapted really well. He still roamed around outside and even leapt up onto the high fence when he felt like it! It really didn't affect his quality of life.

Obviously the eye will take a while to heal and be tender so extra care is needed in the first few days. I'm sure your vet will advise.

I think that removing one eye leads mainly to potential problems - if any - with depth perception. It may be, though, that if that eye was very bad (and his sight from it was already impaired) that he's already done much of his adjustment.

Have a word with the vet and keep a watch on the remaining eye. Lots of luck to him for the procedure.
