The litter tray

My cat is missing - in need of a handhold.

We moved to a new city 6 weeks ago, and only started letting our cats out last week (after several careful, supervised visits to the garden beforehand). We have 3 cats, and the boy in particular is a total homebody - never out for more than about an hour at a time and always underfoot, squawking for food and love and tickles. He is crazy about his sister - they are always snuggling up together and licking each others' ears.

This morning he didn't come find us for breakfast as he normally does. He has form for wandering in and out of other people's catflaps, so I thought he'd probably just made a friend somewhere and would be home by lunchtime.

But it's dark now and no sign of him. We've put flyers through people's letter boxes in our road and the road behind; we've put posters up all around the neighbourhood. We've walked up and down the streets calling for him and looking under cars and shaking boxes of treats.

I'm terrified that something awful has happened to him. I don't know what else I could be doing. Can anyone think of anything?

I know it sounds mad to be so worried after only a day, but we're so new to the area I'm worried he's got lost and won't find his way home.

People before have suggested leaving a litter tray outside as he may smell it, also fur (his own or the other cats) can be out the hoover or brush the others. If he's not back by tomorrow ring around local vets, even if he's microchiped it will make them aware and on the lookout if he does go to them or someone rings for advice, also make sure your microchip details are up to date with your new address and a current phone number.

Thanks, Leopard. I updated our address on everyone's microchips as soon as we moved, so that should be sorted. I'll try putting the litter box outside tonight.

One of my tiny torties disappeared at less than a year old. She got herself shut in an empty property. Ask people to check garages and sheds too. Hope he's home soon.

We lost a cat and he turned up several days later - he'd been hit by a car, damaged his pelvis and had to drag himself home by his front paws. Not nice at the time, but he survived for years afterwards so didn't harm him in the long run.

Sounds obvious, but we found him by walking up and down the road calling him and listening - eventually we heard him a couple of houses away, having been unable to get over the wall to get home.

So please don't give up. It's horrible and you have my absolute sympathy - but it's still early days and may all end okay. Fingers crossed.

Try facebook lost pet pages for your city (which one is it if you don't mind me asking?) . There are loads of Facebook and can really help for example Harvey's Army. Also though its a cat register it on Doglost.co.uk. Check gumtree and other such sites as people post found animals on there. Place his bedding on the washing line so he might catch the scent. Same with putting litter box outside and hoover contents.

I volunteer for lost pet sites/pages etc so might be able to point you to the right one.
