Yet Another Cat Pee Thread

So the cat started peeing on the floor. Vet said was cystitis, gave her an antibiotic and anti-inflammatory injection, and she has been a lot more settled and better until now. This was about a fortnight ago.

I have put an extra litter tray in the area she has started to wee in, which she has used. I swapped the new (now used) litter tray back to the old location in an attempt to get her back to using the original area (in the utility room), and put the old tray in the 'offending' area, and she did at least a poo in both yesterday. Poo is scooped immediately I am aware of it, and litter changed as required - if used, once a week.

I have cleaned the carpet with bio washing powder and also Pets at home odour and stain remover, which apparently has the same enzyme destroying ingredient in it, and to me seems to work and smell fine.

However, this morning I caught her having wee'd on the carpet in the same vicinity (not exactly the same spot) as before. Trays were poo free.

What do I do now!!!?? I can't think of anything that would be stressing her out, she's still going out etc. She had toileting issues in her previous home, but that was apparently due to a neighbouring cat and refusing to go outside. We got her pretty much a year ago and haven't had any issues until now.

I daren't tell DH as he will try and make me get rid of her he's not her biggest fan as it is.

Could it be cystitis again? What do you feed her and how much water does she drink? If she's on dry food I would switch to wet, personally. Cats have a low thirst drive and are less likely to get dehydrated if their food contains the majority of the water they need. My cat has a bit of extra water mixed into her wet pouches too... every little helps. Could it also be possible that the litter tray might be poo free but might smell dirty and urine soaked to your cat? I use clumping litter so that urine get scooped out as well as poo but other litters absorb urine that then stays in the tray. Would your DH really want to rehome her so quickly?

Do you clean wet litter out regularly?
Tried a plug in?
Any changes to house or family?

Well no one can make you get rid of a pet.

I would assume another urine infection. After the vets checked her over you can buy cystease capsules and sprinkle them in her food.

Thanks all. She mainly toilets outside, but I will clean the trays again tonight. One is virtually unused and the other is used but I have left it for a few days in the hope she was attracted by her own smell.

She has a mix of wet and dry food but I will add a bit of water to the wet stuff.

Is it likely to be cystitis again so soon? Or poss not the last bout fully cleared? Worth vetting anyway? I haven't seen any blood.

No changes at home. I think I will get a plug in, as we are going away for 3 nights at the weekend and a friend is going to come in and out to her. She knows her but it might just help her be a bit calmer.

They can get them again quickly if it's stress related.

I'd get a urine sample tested. Do try the cystease, it's really worked for my cat & he gets them because of the stress of living next door to other cats.

Thanks Fluffy. I don't know why she would be stressed all of a sudden but I will get her to the vets again. They couldn't take a sample last night as her bladder was completely empty (mainly on my carpet!).

So vet took a urine sample and no real evidence of infection, other than a trace of protein. So he gave her same treatment and some cystopro capsules to put on her food.

I've got a feliway diffuser now so will get that going. Is it safe to leave on when we're out?

I think you pretty much have to. The cystapro should stop her bladder being sore again.

Poor girl, bladder infections are never fun.

I put the cystopro in some lick-e-lix this morning and she ate half of it and turned her nose up at the rest - it must make it taste funny. I might try putting it on her food and see if the larger quantity disguises it better.

I also put 3 tablespoons of water in her wet food and she gulped it down so that is good.

Feliway plug is on too, but not noticeable difference.

However, dry carpet this morning and evidence of a wee in the tray (albeit the one if the 'offending area' rather than the utility room).

I think you may have to accept that the tray will stay in the offending area. She may not go back to using the utility room. At least it's in the tray though.

Clumping litter, so you can scoop out wee as well as poo? One of mine objects to the try having wee in it.

I might try that siani, I've been reluctant to change the litter in case it made it worse!

I've had success with Cystaid in cat milk rather than on food.
