Why is my cat meowing?

Bit of history, I moved house with my two rescue cats in the Summer. I took black cat to the vets after I was worried he wasn't able to pee, kept going in and out of litter tray but not peeing and meowing more than usual. Vet told me he was perfectly fine and that he had obviously found somewhere else to pee. It all settled down anyway.

About a month ago, black cat was meowing, usually when going in and out of litter tray. Seemed happy otherwise and whenever I went to him when he was meowing, he was just all loved up and purring. I kept an eye on him and after a few days he was back to normal.

I'm a little hesitant in taking him to the vet because not only does he hate it, but my other cat, his brother, for some reason turns against him when he returns from the vet. He hisses at poor black cat and makes his life a misery for about a week. They are normally very loving towards each other.

Now black cat is doing it again! Meowing, especially in/out of the litter box. He only ever normally meows when he is hungry, but he is a greedy little fucker and I've had to cut back on portions because he was putting on too much weight. However, the litter tray is in the cupboard where the cat food is kept (out of reach). I'm wondering if it could be that, although it does seem like a different kind of meow.

Is he just being a bonkers cat keeping me on my toes??

What tests did your existing vet do on him?

Personally, I'd be finding another vet and getting him there - just in case he's having trouble or pain with peeing.

Can't quite remember, they did a scan, I think? And felt his bladder - they said it was tiny so therefore he must be peeing. I am registered at the PDSA hospital, saw two different vets both times I went.

One of my cats has a bit of trouble with her poos sometimes which makes her miaow a lot, (as she's in obvious discomfort) if she is only on dried food (which is recommended by the vets, as better for their teeth). Is your cat on only dried food? If I give ours half a sachet of wet food occasionally, a couple of times a week, it sorts out any bowel movements.

My cat miaowed a lot when she had tooth decay. I didn't realise for ages; until I noticed she had a wobbly tooth. I just thought she had become extra communicative. I felt really bad when I realised she had been in pain for weeks. She had a tooth extraction and was then back to her old self.

Does he seem in pain in other ways? My cat's had two bladder/stomach problems and both times the meowing was distressed, not at all like it is when he's trying to get more food or the cat flap's blocked or something. Also his movement was more awkward and slower than usual.

newyear16 but did your cat change in character at all? If she was in pain all the time then wouldn't she have gone off her food, showed other signs?

Black cat seems normal in many other ways and in fact hasn't done the strange meowing thing since I posted. Seems very happy and content.

EvansOvalPiesYumYum yes he is on dried food. I wondered if he might be a bit constipated. Although I keep a water fountain right next to the food bowl which he often enjoys drinking out of.
