The doghouse

Frenchie with little black scabby things

We rescued a French Bulldog who we will call Carol from a breeder. It's a long story but the breeder had rescued her from a terrible situation where she was kept in a shed and had bad mange and also scars from a dog attack.

The breeder brought Carol home to her house where she has other dogs. one of the other dogs attacked Carol quite badly and so the breeder, who knows DH from his place of work, asked DH if he'd like to have her as she could not keep her safely due to her male dog's dislike of her.

We agreed and took her in. The breeder said that she'd be interested in breeding Carol still if we wanted to...and that she'd pay the bills associated with that and we could keep a puppy.

We said no thank you as we don't think it's sensible or kind. We're getting her desexed. She's 3.

We took her to the vet to see about her skin...the breeder said the marks on Carol's skin are due to mange scarring.

The vet...who we've never used before was crap and dismissive and just said "That's not typical of mange scars" and that was that. He registered Carols' chip to us.

We're taking Carol back to a different vet but wonderd if anyone knows what it could be? She has some skin that's best described as "rough" with scanty hair growth in those areas...there are lots of little tiny hard black dry scabs which come off when you brush her with a soft brush.

Some are bigger though and I don't want to rub too hard in case it hurts her. She seems to like it when I brush her and take the smaller scabs away.

what is it?

I should mention....Carol was cured of mange after the breeder rescued her. She's no mange left at all.

I don't know, but I have heard the bullshit of "oh I rescued this dog from a terrible breeder..." No. SHE is the terrible breeder. I had a dog from a woman who said this exact story - it was a Frenchie as well. They can't bring themselves to admit they were the one who let the poor bugger get in that state.

’desexed’ Sad

Flask I have thought the same thing. We wanted nothing to do with her to be honest. I was immediately skeptical because it seemed all she wanted was to be assured we'd have a litter and she could still benefit financially.

Once we had her though, the breeder called us only once...around the time Carol was due in heat Hmm to check.

Garlic what should I call it if not desexed? I don't know another term? Is that term bad?

Another suspicious detail was the bit about the bite scars...the breeder said Carol was attacked by another dog in the home she'd rescued her from.

Then that her OWN male Frenchie had also attacked Carol.

Carol is an easy, well behaved and docile dog...I don't see why two separate dogs would attack her.

Sorry to keep posting...but if she IS the terrible breeder, then why did she want rid of Carol? Surely she'd think of her as a good way to make money no matter what state she was in?

She has no mange and is more or less healthy apart from the scabby things which might be some sort of dermatitis or similar...or maybe just dry skin. Her skin is black...it's almost like an overgrowth of it or something. It's weird!

The vet said her teeth are excellent.

Cheaper for you to deal with all the costs and health issues if it all goes wrong?

Firstly, well done for taking Carol in. She sounds like she needs someone to care and look out for her. I’m definitely no expert but it sounds a bit like a condition one of my foster dogs had. He was a CKC with black skin. It was a type of dermatitis caused by poor diet. I would rub a bit of dog skin salve to soften them, then gently scratch off the layers of dead skin. Also changed his diet to good quality one, plus a daily dose of Yuderm oil or fish oil. Also the vet prescribed a course of Vetpro healthy skin and coat. It took about 3 months but it did all work. I think you are doing the right thing by trying another vet. Good luck

We feed a raw diet with some high quality dry food sometimes. Since we got her, her hair has definitely grown in more. I will try the dog skin salve...do you know a good brand please? Thanks!

I would definitely try another vet ask him/her what they recommend.
Pity her name isn’t really Carol that’s a brilliant name for a dog.

Her nose is better now as we used balm on it. It was all crusty looking when this pic was taken.

Ahh Carol looks sweet !
As others have said, personally I’d get a second opinion. After having a dog with a scabby skin condition I tried every lotion and potion going and the only one that made a difference was a vet prescribed one. Once I had it under control it was easy to deal with when he got a yearly flare up

Oh she’s lovely bless her. Glad she’s got a good home with you now. Let us know how you get on at another vets.

Yes, I'll book her in with "the good vet" as we've now realised one is good and the other bad.,..we accidentally chose the bad one as we never knew!

Neutered or spayed is what the term is. De-sexed is weird!

Tinyhumansurvivalist · 23/07/2020 14:30

Awww she is a cutie.

How do you know she is definitely clear of mange? What you describe could still be the mange or it could be residual scabbing from it. I would get a second opinion and urgently.

It could also be dermatitis...i believe that frenchies can be prone to it. Again you would need to speak to a vet about washes etc to use. Maybe try some oily fish in her diet to help

Well done for giving her a good home. I've got a Frenchie and there's an amazing Facebook page called French Bulldogs in the UK full of really informed owners and breeders.

If you post on there I'm sure you will get some really good advice. I've picked up loads of info from just reading the posts.

Lots of people posting about rashes and things, the breed seem to be quite susceptible to skin issues.

MissMouse here in Australia everyone says "de-sexed* it's not weird at all. Nothing weird about it. It's just a phrase.

Tiny well the crappy vet said she was...she's not itching or anything....it doesn't look like mange and I believe the breeder when she said she'd got rid of it.

Thanks Elz
