Advice on rescues

Been considering a family dog for a while. We occasionally look after one for a friend. Me and DH had dogs growing up. I would prefer a rescue, one, because it’s giving a dog a chance but also because I don’t want to deal with a puppy tbh.

We are on the list of some rescue centres but we can’t seem to match. We want a small to medium dog, housetrained hopefully and who is Ok with kids. Ds is 10. I think this may be the problem.

I wonder if we’ll ever find a dog who is deemed suitable for under 12s???

Any advice or experience?

Have you tried a breed-specific rescue that fosters the dogs in volunteers' homes? They tend to have a better idea about their dogs and whether they are okay with children.

Where do you live? Here's one listed for suitable to live with kids over 8 years, although "large" Greyhounds are fab for families and do fold up smaller haha!

Contact your local rescues, don't just rely on the websites. Some rescues don't have time to keep their sites updated and often the perfect kid-friendly dogs find their homes before they're put online (hence why some rescues may seem to only have more high-maintenance dogs listed!)

Ah, wait did you say you're on some rescue lists? It can take a lot of patience waiting for the right pup to come along. Once lockdown is lifted they're all going to be inundated with pups as people realise they can't cope with going back to work AND looking after their dogs. (I forsee a lot of separation anxiety issues though!)

Oh thanks for that. I am not sure what breed rescues to look at tbh! I will have a search online to see what ,might be near me.
