Can someone please help, tell me I'm right or put my mind at rest

My beautiful boy is a labradoodle, he's 8 now and he is my whole world. Last Saturday (so 9 days ago now) he had a tick bite. We got it out, he seemed fine, he's had them before (he loves running in long grass) so we didn't think anything of it.

The past 3 nights tho, he has been sick through the night. Just once each night. He's been completely fine during the day and has seemed fine in himself apart from this. Today, I think his back legs seem strange, as if they're staying straighter when he's walking and I think his breathing is shallow. My DF says it's not and I'm just noticing things because I'm looking for them

I have called the vet twice today. They just keep telling me to just feed him scrambled eggs and chicken for a few days and keep an eye on him.

I stupidly googled it and I'm so worried that it's something to do with the tick he had. Me and DF currently not talking because he thinks I'm being ridiculous. I do have anxiety and can fixate on things like this, but I can't shake this feeling I have and no one is listening. How long do I keep an eye on him for until I call the vet back and demand they see him?

I'm so worried 😔

Did you let the vet know your dog had a tick which you removed recently?

Yes.

The first time it was the vet nurse I spoke to. She asked some questions about it. I told her how we removed it. She asked if we got it all, I said I was 99% sure we did, she went away off the phone to speak to the actual vet then came back and said I didn't have to bring him in and just to keep an eye on him.

Second time I spoke to the actual vet, who said as he was still ok in himself, eating, drinking and lively then just to keep an eye o. Him for a few days 😔

Incase it matters, he weighs 32kg and the vet said as it was only 1 tick, not multiple, it wasn't likely to be related

I would go with your gut instinct. Phone again tomorrow, say what you’ve said here and that he just isn’t right and can he please be checked over.
Good luck and please keep us posted. I hope you have a sickness free night

Are you certain there are no more ticks on him? I would be worried if my dog was sick and had stiffness in his legs after having a tick. You obviously feel there is something wrong. If your dog is no better tomorrow call the vet again. Check him thoroughly for ticks too. Even between his pads and in his mouth

If it helps at all, my dog had similar to this in May last year, my FIL was watching him as I was on holiday and he phoned me saying that he had been being sick for a couple nights, his legs went stiff and he was struggling to get up and down the stairs or in and out the car, wasn't wanting to go a walk etc, he took him to the vets and it looked like he had a bug, told us to keep an eye on it. We just have him chicken and boiled rice for a few days and he was perfectly fine a few days later, loving his walks again and able to run about absolutely fine.

I know it's easy to worry because you found a tick (I have anxiety too so completely understand) but I have heard of a few dogs having bugs recently so it could just be a coincidence that it's happened after you finding the tick.

When you took the tick out did it have its front legs on it?
Keep an eye on him through the night and see how he is tomorrow, if he's not showing any signs of getting better speak to the vet again and make it clear you would like him to be checked out, explain how anxious you are and that you can't help feeling it's from the tick

Thank you so much. I have checked him thoroughly so many times and I can't find any more ticks. I will check again today tho.

He wasn't sick through the night. So fingers crossed it is just a bug. I'm gonna phone the vet at 9 and tell them I want him looked at anyway tho

Good to hear you (and dog) had a good night. Fingers crossed that’s the end of it

Thank you everyone.

Vet still won't see him. She said they aren't running surgeries because of Coronavirus and as it's not an emergency I can't bring him in. Even if I did take him in, we wouldn't be allowed into the consultation room with him which I know he wouldn't cope with, he hates the vet as it is never mind being taken away without one of us with him. He would go nuts and she probably wouldn't be able to examine him properly anyway

She has left tick medicine for him that my DF has gone to pick up and said that if there is a tick hiding somewhere this stuff will kill it, but as he is eating and drinking well, Hasnt been sick again and seems to be breathing normally today it is not classed as an emergency and all we can do is monitor him

He does seem a bit better today. slightly less boisterous than normal, but still lively enough.

Fingers crossed it has just been a bug and he's over the worst of it. I feel a lot calmer today

Your dog is feeling much better. That’s great news. I’m glad you feel calmer. It’s a worry but you seem to be coming out the other side 🐶

Thank you!

As stupid as this may sound, it's the fact that he can't tell me what he is feeling, or that he is getting worse or feeling a bit better that gets me so worried

I always imagine the worst with him, And googling his symptoms last night was definitely the wrong thing to do. I hardly slept a wink for checking he was still breathing and thinking that tick paralysis was going to take over his lungs 🙈🙈

He does seem a bit better today. He is currently lying beside the oven as he seems to know that it's his chicken that is cooking. So hopefully whatever it was, he is over the worst

@roking glad that he is feeling a bit better. It's horrible when they're unwell and we don't know what's wrong or how to comfort them.

If it helps put your mind at ease at all though, if it was caused by the tick then he would be getting worse instead of better (at least from the experiences I've had with them), so the fact that he is improving, even just a little bit is a good sign and chances are it's just been a wee bug. As I say they are going about in dogs just now, fingers crossed he's back to himself soon😁 x

Thank you so much everyone.

Happy to report he seems almost completely back to normal.

Sickness has stopped and I think he may have actually pulled a muscle or something in one of his back legs which was causing him to walk strangely. He is walking absolutely fine on one of his back legs now, and the other one he is walking a lot better on
