Night crying puppy

Hiyaa, we’ve just fostered a 5-month old puppy, this is our fourth night with him and he’s been crying for 30mins non-stop. This first night he was the same and we tried to stick it out like the advice we had been given told us to do so. However, a close friend, who is also a dog owner, told us that he shouldn’t be so distressed and to go calm him down, so I went down and slept down their on the floor next to his crate. The first night he would only calm down with me shushing him calmy, the second night i stayed down there again and whenever he started to whimper a little i’d breathe loudly or moved so he knew i was there and then the third night i did the same again. So many of our dog-owner friends have told us to stay down no longer than three nights, so im back upstairs tonight. However, he is still howling and crying loud as ever and I just don’t know how long to leave him for till i should go down and check on him, and let him try go toilet. Please help, stressed puppy owner!!😬😬

What breed is he? Some breeds are more cling than others.

I had my girl in a crate next to bed so when she whined I could take her down for a pee

Oh lawdy. They're babies in a strange house, why do people leave them alone all night?! Get him in your bedroom pronto or sleep on the sofa for a while then go to bed gradually later each night so he knows he is not being abandoned.

I would go straight down to him and comfort him until he falls asleep. Sounds like you've been doing the right thing so far but I couldn't stand to hear him crying and would be down like a shot
