Toilet training at night

We get our Border Terrier puppy on Saturday and I wanted to get advice about toilet training at night.

I've read a lot and there are lots of different opinions so it would be nice to hear what works/worked for you.

He has a crate but it's not big enough for newspaper one end and bed the other. Although I could change this.

I have read about getting up in the night and letting him out - but realistically I could get up to find he's already been or take him out and he doesn't go.

Lots of people say they won't go in their crate but I've also heard that's not true - if they're desperate they have to.

I can sleep next to the crate and when I hear him snuffling around take him out.

Do this. And be prepared to jump up as soon as he stirs and take him outside.

We toilet trained a puppy recently by sleeping downstairs with him (we don't use crates), jumping up every time he woke and taking him out in the garden. Then lots of praise and a treat as soon as he did anything. Probably 2 or 3 times a night.

His crate sounds far too small tbh if his bed takes up most of the space.

Puppy 12 weeks here. Ours goes out at 11pm does pee pee. Crated until 06.30am . I wake her up and take her out to garden and don’t speak until she goes. Then I wake up the neighbours by shouting Pee pee Good girl a dozen times. Then I take her to the garden every 30 mins thro the day. It’s exhausting. But it’s getting better. Only one night time accident since we got her .

I sleep in my bed with my clothes ready to fall in to and a torch by back door .

We had pup in a crate next to our bed. As soon as he stirred we took him straight out. No talking or playing. Just straight out for a wee (praised him gently but no treat) then quietly straight back to bed. That went on for about 2 weeks then he started to sleep straight through. It was tiring but worth it as we've had no issues with night time toileting since

Mine needed to toilet through the night. I initially slept close but in a different room using a baby monitor to hear and see when he woke up.

I agree this is the best way to quickly toilet train your pup

Ours slept in our room bed at night and head butted the door when he needed to go out from day one! We never had any overnight accidents.

My pup is crated next to my other dog downstairs but I can still hear her. Luckily she is a vocal madam when she needs to go in the night. We haven't had a night time accident yet, just daytime ones when we aren't paying enough attention! The first couple of nights were rough. Up every 2 hours and sitting by her crate till she settled. After that shes already down to once maybe twice in the night. Bed 10 to 10.30 up to pee at 6.30 to 7 then back to bed till breakfast at 8. We picked her up at 8 weeks old last Tuesday so coming up 2 weeks ago. Hope any of the waffley info may help.

Should have said first pup last year I did do the sleeping next to the crate and move it/me further away over time. Still up in the night though.

Don't encourage him to toilet in his crate - crate training is a great tool for housebreaking puppies as they naturally don't want to mess in their beds. Have the crate in your room so that you can hear him when he wakes up wanting to go outside - don't give him the opportunity to have an accident in the crate.

Even when my two were really young puppies, they never once pooed or peed in their crate - floors and carpets were another matter however and took a good solid year to perfect 😂
