Advice on kennel cough

My 5 month old puppy has picked up kennel cough, I suspect from our puppy school class although realistically it could be anywhere!

He was coughing and clearly under the weather since Friday so I’ve kept him in and rested him. I’ve given him honey to soothe his throat and made sure he’s eating, drinking and toileting ok. Is there anything else I should do?
I phoned the vets and they were ambivalent about bringing him in unless I wanted a health check.
He seems happy just now his crazy self, plays but not non stop as usual, lots of resting needed. How long should I keep him away from other dogs?
Any advice would be appreciated!

Sorry to hear that puppy is poorly.

My 1 year old picked up a mild case of kennel cough 2 weeks ago. She's brighter in herself now, but still has the odd cough so we're still on isolation from other dogs. Her vet says he expects the cough to be gone by this time next week, and once she hasn't coughed for a week she can be re-vaccinated. A week after that she's allowed to go near other dogs again. She's not had antibiotics as they wanted her to fight it off herself.

It feels like a long time to us, but as it's so contagious I guess they're right to be cautious. By the time she's allowed to see another dog it'll have been about 5 weeks, so i'm expecting her to go mad with excitement!

Hope puppy gets better quickly

Whilst they cough they are infectious , some dogs can cough for up to 6 weeks.

Wow that’s a long time, we’ve been isolated since Friday but he doesn’t seem to mind surprisingly. Poor puppy just seems so sad, not his normal bouncy self, although he will play just for a short time and not his usual Duracell bunny length!
I’m going to see if I can get an appointment today just to check his temperature and also yesterday he smelt very fishy, which after a quick google could be his anal sacs so I think a quick check over is in order.
