Diarrhoea and sickness

Last night we gave my 15 week old puppy a chicken chew stick. She had half of one the previous day and was fine so last night she had 3/4 of one whilst we were at the pub with her. As soon as we got home she had awful diarrhoea which just came shooting out of her, it scared her a little bit. I sat with her for an hour before I went to bed and she seemed settled and asleep.

Got up to check on her at half 12, she had been sick and another 4 episodes of diarrhoea and then another when I put her outside. I can only imagine it's the chicken stick that's caused this as it may be too rich for her? I rang the out of hours vets and they recommended we keep an eye on her as she still wanted to play last night. Stayed up with her through the night, she was sick once more but only a tiny bit. I then gave her some water and after about 5 minutes she had another episode of diarrhoea. She went back to sleep then I gave her some more water but just a little. She's kept that down and a treat she found on the floor. But this morning she is still having diarrhoea/water.

Do we need to see a vet or just keep an eye on her? I'm thinking she will maybe need chicken and rice for her meals but being Sunday all the shops are shut until 10/11 🙈 or shall I give her normal food?

I’d definitely take her to the vet. She’s had a lot of fluid loss with the diarrhoea and is very young. In the meantime keep offering small, frequent amounts of fluids. Poor pup, I hope she’s ok.

Boiled chicken or white fish if you think she will keep it down. You can get it from the supermarket freezer section. No rice. It sits in the stomach too long and ferments which is the last thing a pup with a delicate stomach needs. What is her normal food? Does it have chicken in it? If not she may be intolerant to chicken and thats why the chew has upset her so definitely give the fish if thats the case. Prokolin paste or Zoolac paste is available from amazon and will be cheaper than from the vet. May also be able to get it from pets at home but you may as well get it from the vet at that price. Its good for settling stomachs. Dorwest tree barks powder is also useful to have. If it doesn't settle she will need a vet visit. It may be something like Giardia which will need antibiotics. Keep the water you boil the chicken/fish in and use it for her to drink. I know shes a young pup but dehydration is far more concerning than a day or two with no food. Hope shes better soon.

Essa she has had chicken and rice before so I know she can tolerate it but didn't know that. Will just give her chicken today then. I think we will go to the vets for peace of mind but the receptionist last night was very much keep an eye and wait for it to pass!

The vet can give you a drink that contains lots of electrolytes and other stuff that can help rehydrate them so maybe give them another call.

It might have been the chew but equally it might be a coincidence.

She's drank plenty of water this morning. Had some steamed chicken and done one poo which had a bit more structure to it, not completely normal but getting there! Think she is a bit better will continue to keep an eye on her and see if she needs to go to the vets!

She now hasn't been for a poo since half past 11ish this morning! Plenty of wees and enjoying her food though! This puppy gives me so much stress!
