Is this the best insurance option?

Hi

We’re looking at dog insurance for our 11-year-old cocker spaniel. I’ve found what I think looks the best deal. £22 per month, £2000 limit per year per condition. £99 plus 20% excess.

In your experience, is this enough cover for a dog of this age? She’s never been ill or in an accident.

Does this excess seem too much?

Thanks! I don’t want us to end up in a pickle

Who is the company? £2k could be wiped out really really quickly. Ours have medium cover and have £7k per year per condition.

I'd look for a lifetime policy as if you claim on your current policy you are likely to find it excluded the next time the policy renews. Have you looked at 'bought by many'?

One severe D&V episode which required numerous scans, admissions and treatments was more than £2000 and my vets give me 15% off as I am with their healthy pet plan.

My dog jumped a ditch and missed and caused back injury and a specialist consultation was £240 and we narrowly avoided a £5000 surgery. An MRI on its own would have set me back over £2000.

An emergency operation to remove an obstruction cost over £1500 and again we had 15% off.

So based on my experience no it isn't enough cover unless you can find top ups for when that £2000 per limit is exceeded and you also have to pay 20% on top of that so your costs could mount up very quickly.

Sorry I don't think that's a good deal!

£2k is not enough and I would also look for a lifetime policy

Unless your dog is over 9yrs old it's also possible shop around and find a policy without the 20% copayment.

Oh just seen your dog is 11yrs old. Copayment will be standard at that age

The company is animal friends. Says it’s award winning!

I have one dog with animal friends and they have been great at paying out.

My 10 yr old gsp has a £4K lifetime policy and I pay £43 a month for a comparison
