And I know it's the right thing to do but Christ I feel shit about it. Have been crying on and off yesterday and this morning.

Ironically the old boy is having quite a good morning and has been quite sprightly, but he is starting to suffer. He's almost deaf, senile, has arthritis and over the last week is starting to have seizures, so I suspect something cancerous is going on.

He's 15 and I have had him for over a decade. He's sleeping next to me right now and I am dreading saying goodbye to him.

So sorry Flowers. It's the one last thing we can do though for our loved ones which is to make sure they don't suffer at the end Flowers

I know.

And I know it's selfish but I don't want to let him go. The thought of not having him snuggled up next to me in the morning, when he comes for a cuddle, is absolutely destroying me.

I'm so sorry Thanks Unmumsnetty hugs for you - it's the worst feeling, even when you know it's 100% the kindest thing you can do for them.

Setting off shortly. He's had a bowl of roast chicken this morning. Have had lots of sofa cuddles but he can't get comfortable and keeps going off on his own so I know we are making the right decision.

Fortunately we have a lovely vet practice. I went in to speak to them earlier and the nurse has got us in with the senior vet, who is wonderful and I know he'll look after him.

He's asleep right now and I can't bear the fact that when I wake him up it will be to put him in the car.

Knowing your ddog has had a well loved life will give you great comfort. I carry massive guilt our foster ddog was pts after a breakdown caused by abusive previous owner. He had no life at all for the most part.
If you feel up to sharing a pic of your handsome fellow we are happy to receive.
Xxx

What you are doing is showing your love for him. As a human, I wish someone could show me the same love should I need it when I am old and ill.

He's gone. A bit of a squeak when the needle went in - but he was always a massive wuss. But went very peacefully, and then pissed all over us, which at least made as laugh as we were crying.

I know we made the right choice but I am going to miss him so very much. He was 'my' dog - followed me everywhere, always sat next to me. But he had a 'good' passing which was what I wanted for him.

Thank you all for the support. This is truly the worst part of having animals.

Oh OP I'm sorry. If it's any consolation (I'm sorry if it's not), I'm giving my pup extra tight cuddles as I'm sobbing - I dread this already and she's only a baby! BiscuitThanksSad

Kat it truly is the worst part of having a dog. This isn't my first rodeo, so I knew what to expect but DH hadn't had to go through it before and was crying his eyes out afterwards.

We're fine. The other dogs (we have another two) are a bit subdued and know that something's not right, but they will adjust and so will we. It was time to let him go but he's had a very long and happy life.

Cuddle your pup and enjoy her as you'll have her for a long time to come, and you'll make lots of lovely memories - as we did with our boy.

I’m so sorry OP. We had to very suddenly have our girl pts on Christmas Eve. Utterly shit. We are bereft. We still have one left and I’m so relieved as he’s a huge comfort, but it’s so painful. She was my girl and bastard cancer snatched her away very suddenly without warning. Also sending some very unmumsnetty hugs to you xx

Thank you for all your lovely messages.

The house feels strange without him but I know it was the right thing to do because he was starting to suffer. DH has been going through all our photos of him so that I can print off my favourites and put a picture frame up. He got some lovely ones on his last morning but they are a bit bittersweet just now.

I had a cry yesterday as I'd had to put his coat in the washing machine and there were still some of his hairs stuck to it. The other two are starting to get back to normal but they both know something is wrong and our girl has been mooching round looking for him and wondering where he is.

Big MN hugs to anyone missing their hounds at the moment.
