Puppy walks

Just looking for some advice. My boss recently got a pup (we think whippet x collie) who has now had all her jabs and I've been helping out with her morning walk. She's approx 18-20 weeks old (rescued from a family who really didn't have a clue and were going to sell her to the highest bidder on the street). Obviously I can't take her for long long walks with her being so young but I'd like to make our time together as fun and as educational as possible. We cracked sitting at roads last week. I'm not a novice when it comes to dogs but puppys are a new one on me (I've always had slightly older rescues dogs). So any tips? She is very bright but also has a stubborn streak. What can I do on walks to give this lovely girl the best chance?

Have you started working on recall yet? If so, I'd get a long line (different to an extending lead) attach it to the harness, go to the park and start working on teaching her to come back to you. With regards to keeping her entertained outside of walks, there's an excellent Facebook group called Canine Enrichment which has lots of ideas.

Dogs like to sniff. Sometimes a walk that is short in distance but long in time (let them sniff all they like for as long as they like) is best! You can't walk the dog far but you can be out for quite a long time. I can spend 30 mins taking my pup just round the block if I let him sniff whatever he likes.

Her owners doing the recall work :) she loves a good sniff, I'm quite lucky in that I work near the river so lots of opportunity for sniffing. She said hello to the water this morning....

Brain games are so good for pups as they can't walk far. Mine went out this morning (he's eight months) and we were only walking for half an hour probably, the rest of the time was sniffing and meeting new people and dogs. He's fast asleep on my feet now!
