Boys or girls - what's your preference?

Just contemplating adding another to our pack as we have gone from 3 dogs to 1 over the last few years after losing two old girls. We are left with our 7 year old bitch lab. She always loved the other two and played and snuggled up to them - however she is not interested in any other dogs. She is not nasty in any way, she will grumble if they invade her personal space and will bark and tell off if they don't listen to the grumble. She was well socialised from a pup, a behaviourist told us that that is just her nature 🙄 She quite happily walks with others and is happy with other dogs being around as long as they don't invade her dance space.

So we know she isn't going to be best pleased if we add a new addition and will probably spend a lot of time avoiding, being upstairs, grumbling or drooling.

Do you think a boy or a girl puppy would be better?

What are your preferences as to a dog or a bitch 🤔

A puppy can be irritating and have no manners, particularly around personal space - a challenge for even the most mild mannered dog.

Would you consider a dog that's past the puppy stage and with some more grown up manners, for the sake of your current dog? Working with a rescue you'd be able to introduce them first and see how they got on.

If your dog is older and doesn't tolerate other dogs in her space, why on earth would you consider a bouncy, in-your-face puppy?!

I wouldn't annoy her with another dog at all. Why? But if you feel compelled somehow, then a dog rather than a bitch imo.
