Blood in Poo

Hi, my 12 week old black lab has blood in his Poo.

He has had a runny bum since we collected him at 8 weeks. We have been feeding him boiled chicken and rice but gradually mixed in biscuits and today's meals have been just biscuits (Royal Canin puppy).

He is pooing a lot, but it is more solid than when it was just mousse like, in the first few days. Today he has probably done about 12-15 poos.Shock

He has a great appetite, is drinking loads, happily playing in the garden today and has been training with me.

Do you think I need to take him to see a vet? We are going on Friday morning anyway for his second jabs.

It is a bright red streak of what appears to be blood.

Thanks.

Yes, he does need a vet. Diahrrea in puppies can cause them to go downhill very quickly as they get dehydrated. Blood is usually a sign of bacterial infection, so he probably needs antibiotics.

I have had this with a dog in the past. Check it with the vet - otherwise you will just worry. Mine just had a very sensitive stomach and took every opportunity to frighten me, but I have never regretted getting him checked over just in case of something awful.

Sounds like giardia, so he needs to see a vet tomorrow to start treatment

Mine had similar episodes when very young and often needed an antibiotics injection. Also with time realised my dog did not digest chicken or rice very well so the 'go to' diet for an upset stomach made his upset stomach worse.

So yes I would phone the vets rather than wait for the Friday appointment especially as they may postpone the vaccination anyway if your puppy is ill.

Definitely vets. You also need to speak to the breeder - if your pup is sick then chances are his littermates are as well :(

Thanks all.

None of his siblings are ill

Yes, take him to the vet. It might just be an infection but it could be something more serious. Diarrhoea in puppies can be really serious if left untreated.
