Greyhounds in a not so big house?

We are thinking about getting a dog, have been for a while and are considering a rescue greyhound. However we are a bit concerned that our reasonably small house is already pretty full with 3 children and 2 adults. Do any current owners have any good advice about space they need/take up? I’ve heard they often stretch rather than curl up!?!

Greyhounds just need a spot on the sofa or a big cushion in the corner. Most are neater and less bouncy than a lot of smaller dogs. Go for it :)

if you have a greyhound size spot to put a comfy bed you’re fine , if they’ve been in a kennel home life will feel luxurious!

I'm in a 2 bed flat with 3 of us at the time...i home trialled a greyhound with no issues! Okay, he claimed the sofa but other than that he didn't seem to mind the space.

They are asleep most of the time😏they will be so happy to have a living home they absolutely won't mind the size.

Yay, I’m loving all the encouraging replies! It is more my husband worrying about our house feeling even more cluttered with a leggy hound in the mix.....I trust that hound will find itself a comfy space and doze happily! It’s just the size that worries us but I love their nature and everything else.

We have a huge house but our ddogs don't spend their days covering every square foot of it!!
Our 2 Lurchers stole the dcats new beds!! They are very foldable!!

I have a giant hound. Sight hounds like a run. Then a VERY long snooze. As long as you have a space on the sofa or a spot for a VERY comfy bed you will be fine. (I always feel a whizzing smaller dog seems to take up more room than a snoozing giant hound?!)

We had exactly the same conversation about 14 months ago. We now have a beautiful, leggy hound and she is so calm and non-intrusive in the house. The only time she feels big is when we feed her and she gets very over excited and bouncy or we get the lead out and again, very over-bouncy and excited. But generally, she sleeps and we love her.

The best bit about her is that you don't need to bend down to stroke her - she's the perfect height :) (Also the perfect height for stealing things off the worktops in the kitchen but hey ho).

We have a poodle and a greyhound. Our poodle definitely seems to take up more room than our greyhound! He is all over the place and into everything. Our grey just snoozes on her bed in the corner and you barely know she's there!

A greyhound WILL take over your sofa, and possibly your bed too but ours is pretty good at curling into the available space if the sofa is already occupied when she gets there!

Once they've settled in they tend to sleep on their backs with their legs in the air, so that should help! Although they're not very comfy bed partners - all bony angles - its like sleeping with a lovely, gentle hexagon!

They expand. Our house is tiny - 2 kids, a very very long legged husband and DD1's got ridiculously long legs too... and a greyhound in a 2 bed house. I spend most of my life stepping over one set of legs or another!

You just manage though - although the fact we've got a 2+3 seater corner sofa of which 4 available seats seem to have been dibsed as "the dog's seat" continues to bemuse me.

Mine gets into bed the second DH goes for a shower in the morning and tries to push me out - braces herself against the bedroom wall and starts pushing away with the legs. She's a right sod of a dog (I got the intelligent greyhound)!

We have a large greyhound in a fairly small house. He likes his bed, our bed and the conservatory when it is sunny, he doesn't take up much more space. He's also the best dog ever v

The advantage with greyhounds is their love of comfort. Stick a comfy bed in the most unobtrusive corner and that’s where you’ll find them. (Or on the sofa or human bed, of course.) The collie and lab crosses I grew up with might have been smaller but were always stretched out in the perfect position for being tripped over; usually in front of the cooker or sink.
