Discharge from eye

My dog has developed discharge from left eye. Is this something likely to clear itself up or do we need to take him to the vets?

I guess I'm holding off going to the vets as every time we've taken him before - for leg injury and previous eye problem we struggled with giving him the medication/ putting in the ointment and he recovered anyway in a day or two.

He did look unhappy this evening though so I probably ought to take him tomorrow.

My vets always see me the same day for eye issues as they don't like to take risks with them. You don't know whether it's conjunctivitis (which can be contagious and bacterial etc) or that he might have damaged his eye or have something stuck in it (the vets have washed out small sand particles that were really irritating mine on one occasion).

Personally I would take to the vets.

When my dog lived in Greece, the local vets gave us Tobrex (which is tobramycin, I think) in an ointment to squidge in eyes that were sore/infected. You can buy it in pharmacies there without prescription. I stock up every year when I'm in Greece and have used it to treat various cats and dogs in UK as well as Greece. We've not yet had to actually see a vet for help with sore eyes. It had a miraculous effect on one of our stray dog friends in Greece who had pranged his eye on some wire, was in agony and looked as though he would lose the eye. He was better in 3 days. So, if you are going abroad at all in the future, see if you can get some little tubes of Tobrex as they are invaluable in the medicine cupboard.

I would definetly take to vets with a check up, our last dog had lens luxation, had several eye infections treated before a trainee vet from Australia thought he should see a specialist. Probably nothing serious but eye stuff should always be checked out. I was worried when current pup had minor discharge but a change to better food sorted that out.

We went along to the vet this afternoon and have got some eye drops which I think are antibiotics. It's going to be fun holding him still whilst we put them in!!

Any eye issue mine have had have been solved by golden eye- always works without fail.
