The doghouse

Dog doesn't like cold or wet. Is this normal?

My dog doesn't like bad weather. I thought that it was my job to take my dog out whatever the weather. I just opened the door to let him out and he cowered away. I even threw out a treat and he wouldn't go outside. This happens whenever it is raining or windy and if there is snow he's just not interested in going outside. He just retreated to his warm bed.

Is it usual for a dog to want to stay in their warm bed when the weather is cold? I feel bad for not taking him out.

My mum's dog is the same.
Despises the rain, hates going out in bad weather despite coats.
She is a whippet though so quite skinny and has thin skin

What breed is he? I have a pug cross and she hates the cold and wet but is getting better.

Lol, I have a roughy toughy, goes out beating in all weathers spaniel, but if you offer him the chance to go into the back garden on a wet cold day, you will be given a disgusted 'are you MAD?' look as he beats a retreat to his warm bed Grin

Our dog doesn't mind the cold at all but hates getting wet, he also does his best to dodge mud.

If we happen to be out walking when it starts to rain he walks right up against me, as if he's using me to shelter from it, and also tries to dry himself by pushing his snout between my knees and then walking repeatedly through my legs. He's not an especially small dog either - he's a Collie/GSD cross.

My Labrador hates the cold, wind or rain. I force him out and he's so moody with me for the rest of the day.

My first thought was how lucky you are! I have a Labrador who will gamely go out in any sort of wild weather while i am cowering in the doorway looking less than impressed. I am sure your dog is not going to be adversely affected by missing a few walks.

My spaniel hurtles out of the door in all weathers, but if it is raining he then screeches to a halt and tries to go back in.
He's fine once he gets going if it's day time, but he stubbornly refuses his night time walk if it's raining, so we just let him have a wee in the garden.

Mine is OK in the rain, but he hates the sea. I stand by the water's edge watching other dogs bound in and out having the time of their lives, while mine goes in the other direction every time a wave comes near. He also endures a bath with great suffering in his eyes.

Mine hates rain - refused so far this morning to go out for a wee. If I walk hi in the rain he runs from tree to tree for shelter.

He’s a cairn - it should be in his genes to be used to it.

My Staffy is only a fair weather dog, she will not poo if the conditions are not right, she won't go in the garden at all so always needs taken for a wee walk but if it's wet, cold, windy she huffs and puffs and is a right diva!

My skinny malinky lurcher doesn' t do cold or wet. If its raining, I have to put his raincoat over his fleece housecoat (worn approx end of August to May) and shove him out to wee.

If he's cold (ie, no coat or not a thick enough one) he is totally pathetic and whinges. Thus he also has long legged pyjamas...

Both of my spaniels do this! They also both love walks, even in bad weather, once they get going.

ScreamingValenta
Sounds very similar to mine, although I have no idea what she'll do if I took her to the sea.
Loves going out in any weather, rain wind snow doesnt matter to her. Will go out her way to jump in any puddle or mud pit she can find. Which is just awful as she has a coat like cotton wool. But as soon as I try to give her a bath, all her paws go everywhere as she trys to cling to the side. Sometimes I resort to watch her paws in a bowl outside and its a fight to get just her paws in that.

My Jack Russell is the same. She’s nearly 15 and has been like this sa now a puppy. We have to practically drag her outside (bribe with treats) to get her outside in bad weather. Since Christmas it’s been awful because it’s been so wet and cold.
But we do make her go for a walk, we find if we let her off she moped about all day and as soon as we get out into the fields she does enjoy it.

My Bernard would make the most useless rescue dog in the world she really dislikes wind, rain, anything over about 22°c & snow. My Retriever is the complete opposite, she'll just go & sit in the rain or snow. Most animals dislike wind, it disorientates them.

Staff x here....all sounds very normal to me, hates the wet and last winter consistently refused to go out for a walk in the morning, we resorted to driving him to the park where he was then happy to walk
Had some VERY strange looks from the neighbour's Grin

I frequently stand in the garden in the rain while my Spaniel stands in the hall and looks disgusted.

He's fine once he's out, but I have had to resort to lifting him over the doorstep!
