Just when I think I am getting over losing my beloved dog in February, I started to watch The Snow Dog on TV, and am now in tears (yet again!). I have lost dogs in the past, and have two others, but this old boy was the doggy love of my life. I took him on at the age of eight as a favour for a friend of a friend. I had him for six wonderful years until he suddenly became very ill and had to be put to sleep. I keep looking for another just like him on The Oldies website etc. Has anyone else intentionally replaced a dog very similar to one they have lost? How did it work out?

Ahhh, I love older dogs. We took one on at the age of 8 and she was possibly the best dog in the world. I'm not sure if I would intentionally set out to find another one so similar, I don't think it's fair on you or the new dog, if you see what I mean.

Go for another oldie though, they are so often overlooked and there aren't that many people like you out there.

After our ddog was pts in July I wanted to replace him with the same breed and an oldie. At the refuge they had a LabxRetriever 10 years old and I so wanted to give her a home. We travelled an hour and a half to see her (and others that we’d seen on their website) but she wasn’t MY dog, I didn’t feel anything for her except so sorry that I wasn’t going to be bringing her back home. I realized what I was looking for my dboy and I had to accept that he was never coming back. We have now got a Retriever puppy and as my vet rightly said no two dogs are ever the same. He has licked away our pain and we are so looking forward to creating wonderful different memories with him. Sadly I’m afaraid Op you won’t find your ddog again.

so agree with almost
I lost my beloved 'lurch' companion in August this year and the grief is no less raw now than it was then. Sad
I keep wanting him to be back with me (not old and ill) and although I keep a watch on the rescue sites and feel sure I will get another pointy hound - what I really want at the moment is him back restored to health and loving his life. So not yet ready for another dog who would never ever replace him.
The 'new' dog would have to have the special something that makes him right for me and who I feel I could love as much as my old dog. Not a replacement but a new experience with a differant dog Smile

Thank you all for your wise words and I know what you are saying is right. I am going to take more time to recover from my loss. I think part of the attraction was that I had him as an older dog and I know he was a pain as a youngster! So I will probably look at getting another oldie in time, as I definitely preferred all the dogs I have owned as they got older. I just won't try to replace him....
