Poorly dog :(

My 6 month old puppy has got diarrhoea, this is his 3rd day of having it and (sorry if TMI) it's just coming out like water. I took him to the vets yesterday and she's given some pro kolin and some Royal Canin Gastro Intestinal food and told me to wait it out a couple of days and then bring him back. He's not going frequently and can go up to 8hrs without going but still every time he goes it's just brown water coming out :( he is eating little bits of the food and is drinking but seems to have lost weight (this is weighing on two different scales - my own and the vets so could be a difference there, he does feel a bit thinner though) and is quite tired. Is there anything more I can do to help him?

I think I would phone them tomorrow and tell them it isn't getting any better. When mine had diarrhoea they mentioned if it continued they would take a sample for analysis. Poor pup, hope he gets better soon.

Agree with BiteyShark. I'd ring the vet in the morning, I wouldn't be leaving a 6 month old puppy for another couple of days like that.

Yes I will phone them tomorrow. Will a sample from today still be ok tomorrow? I had to get a bit as it was the first time he's had something that wasn't completely liquid and didn't know if I'd be able to get anything again. It's hard to get a sample when it's not solid!

I would offer the sample that you managed to get today to the vets anyway as they can then decide whether it is good enough or not. Poor dog, it's horrible isn't it when they are poorly like that Sad.

Does anyone know if pet insurance will pay if he has to have lots of tests if he has been seen by a vet for diarrhoea a few months ago? He was insured by his free insurance that time and didn't claim or anything as it was only about £50 for meds. I know they like to get out of paying by saying that it's a previous condition etc.

I'm with Tesco btw and they do cover tests I'm just wondering because he has been seen for diarrhoea once before and I've read lots about people not being able to claim for things like this Sad

Not sure if I follow you. Are you with a different insurer now and are questioning whether they will view it as an existing illness? I would hope that as it wasn't a definite illness/injury they would not view it as such but with insurance there are so many t&cs probably the easiest thing is to give them a quick call and ask or ask your vet as they are the ones that provide the history to the companies.

Yes last time we took him we were with someone else and now with Tesco. It doesn't matter as I'm still taking him but I just don't easily have spare cash at the moment which is why he's insured but now wondering if they'll say they won't pay out as he has been to the vets with diarrhoea before and therefore it's an existing illness. Which is stupid but I know they are like that. I'll ask today. I'm so worried about him he looks so sad. I can't hardly eat or sleep I've been sleeping downstairs with him. Hopefully we get some answers.

I'm with Tesco for my pooch - it comes down to what your vet would tell them and what they put the diarrhoea reason down as last time.
When the vet fills out their part of claim form they would need to just put 'new condition' rather then ongoing. As your dog is so young I doubt you'd have any problems

I didn't need the insurance as it was only £46. The vet has give antibiotics to try now. I asked how long to wait before coming back if I don't see an improvement and she said a week...that seems like such a long time if he still has diarrhoea for that whole time but I guess they must know. I've got another problem now, dog has been eating but after I tried to give him his antibiotic in various foods he now doesn't trust me at all if I offer him anything so now is refusing to eat!

Are you just trying to get him to eat his usual food? With mine if he needs encouraging to eat his kibble then grated cheese over it make it taste delicious Grin

Aww he's completely better now. The antibiotics did the trick. He'll just take them in his normal food now that he's got his appetite back! Just got to get the weight back on him now as he lost quite a bit in that short time.
