The doghouse

We have a 15 year old beagle as the family dog. I was only 4 when we got her. We saved her as a puppy from an animal testing centre (there was a fire there, and she managed to escape... a police lady was looking after her so we kept her after that. She has a tattoo from the testing centre in her ear) so we've grown up together. As weird as it sounds, I've always said she's like my sister. We also have another puppy (who is wicked), he's young and healthier than ever.

Growing up, our beagle had lumps on her head which needed to be cut out, slipped disks in her back, phantom pregnancies, the list goes on...

Thousands of pounds, and weeks in vets has been spend on her to get better in the past.

She's always been a bit on the mental side (chewing up sofas, locking her self in a bathroom with an open tin of purple pain so she was covered in it, escaping out of the front door and running to the next village) but she's the most friendly and living dog ever and wouldn't hurt anyone.

Now she's getting older she's calmed down a lot, became lazy, sleeping most of the day and only got up for food. She's going blind and deaf.

Our Jack Russell puppy used to suckle on her when we first got him so I think he looks to her as being like his mum, they look after each other.

I got home today to find her wobbling around the living room and unable to stand up properly. I think this is the end of everything. She isn't in pain but I don't think there's much else we can do.

The last few times she's been ill, my mum has always said she will be fine and she's been right.. but just by looking at my mum now, you can tell she's upset and I think she's scared to tell me our little dog isn't going to be okay.

It's heartbreaking really. I don't really know what I expect people to say, but our dog isn't just a dog. She's the best pet ever. I'm now 6 1/2 pregnant and have always laid with her and jokingly said "you better still be here when the baby gets here" but I don't think here's much hope.

I'm so sorry OP.

The only advice I have is just remember you saved her from a terrible life and gave her so much love she deserves this in the end as well!

I could mirror your story!!
Collie cross though - had to be pts at age 20!! When I was also 20. Only child with a doggy sister!! I was pregnant with ds. Vet came to the house and me and dm cuddled her. .
It was August 4th 1991 and can still remember.
Be there at the time if you can bear it. It really is the last gesture of love you can give.
And it is the hardest thing to say goodbye but that's the responsibility of dog ownership. .
Xxx

This is her, her name is Fizz. I'm an only child so she's been the only company I've been used to really. Sounds stupid.

Thank you for your comments xx

I've been by her side all night and made sure she's been laying down as much as possible. Brought her dinner and water too her, and helped her outside when she needed the toilet.

It's going to be so hard to say good bye but I'm so happy about all the times she's been there with me. She would always cuddle me when I was upset and everything so now I just need to be there for her. I love her loads. Xx

What a wonderful life you have given her. We rescued a 1yo in November and already she is like a sibling to 5yo DS.

I have loved and lost 3 dogs. My heart is breaking for you Flowers

Oh, Fizz! What happiness you've given her. What a naughty, free life she's enjoyed. And how lucky to have humans to help her go gently. Is the vet going to come out? Being there at the end with her will make it so much easier for her - be brave for your beautiful brave girl. Flowers

Thank you for everyone's messages! They've made me smile xx

My mum is waiting for her boyfriend to come home from finishing work (should be soon). We know she isn't going to get any better so I think the vet will be coming later on today.

Apparently she's been having little stokes for a couple of weeks but my mum didn't want to scare me. So I think what happened yesterday was a proper one and it's proper knocked everything out of her. She doesn't even respond to her name anymore.

She's been sleeping in my room this morning so I'm just going to be there for her while I can. She's the best xx

She's absolutely gorgeous OP. Hugs for you. It will be tough to say goodbye but she's had a much better life with you than she would have otherwise. You're her hero.

She is lovely, and her legacy to you all is unconditional love and a fund of funny stories about her crazy, loopy ,eccentric ways that will last you for ever.

I know it is hard, but you are making the decision for her that she can't make for herself, it is just so unfair that the final act of love we show our pets is the one that hurts our hearts the most.

Take care .

Flowers my best friend and companion through growing up & moving countries was PTS when my first ds was 3 weeks old. 23 years later I still think of him most days. Fizz is beautiful.

She's gorgeous. Take comfort in the wonderful, long, love-filled life you've given her. We faced this a couple of weeks ago - I've had a really stressful couple of years and pickle was my rock, so I do totally get you. I just wanted her to hold on until June, but it's not about us is it. Thinking of you, your mum and lovely fizz Flowers
