The doghouse

12-year-old lab cross has started weeing in the house

My lab-pointer cross bitch has always had a cast iron bladder so weeing in the house has never been an issue before. As she has got a bit older she has needed to go out more often so she is let out into the garden four or five times through the day. She has severe arthritis and a leg injury (ruptured Achilles' tendon) so she can't go out for walks but she has been happy to potter around the garden and seems to be in good spirits and content. Recently however, she has started weeing in the house. She will do it just after she has been out in the garden and even if someone is in the room with her so it seems that she is choosing to go in the house rather than having an incontinence issue. Has anyone come across this kind of problem before? A previously housetrained dog that has started going in the house?

Rather than her choosing to go in the house it sounds like she doesn't know she needs when she is out in the garden i.e. she has little control over it. Sounds like part of a gradual decline and I would see the vet for advice.

Yes, my 10 year collie cross old bitch started doing this - turned out she had diabetes, and once she was on insulin, the weeing indoors stopped, and she lived another 2 years. Might be worth getting her checked out?

Vet check, it could be a wide variety of things ranging from a UTI to pain.

She needs more Metacam anyway so I'll take her to the drop in clinic tomorrow. Thanks for the response.
