Should I get a whippy puppy?

I've always sworn I'd get a rescue dog if I got into the position to have a dog at all. Well, I've just bought my own place with a garden...and I've also just dog-sat a whippet for a month and fallen in LOVE.

I love the gentleness and affectionate nature of the whippet, and that they're non-smelly and don't shed much fur. Whippets are very hard to come by here (West Oz) for some reason, but I have the chance to reserve a female puppy who will be ready to leave her mother in 12 weeks.

Does anyone want to talk me in or out of this? I feel so guilty for not getting a rescue dog, but at the same time, most of the rescues on offer don't suit my lifestyle or home.

no, can't talk you out. they are gorgeous, i read on here that they are great for people who like cats, as they love sofa loafing.

My friend has a whippet collie cross and he is just lovely. He's a happy dog, very intelligent and loves clambering up all over her on the sofa, I'm sure he thinks he can fit in her lap!

This puppy is going to cost $1000. I just want one so badly! I'm afraid that if I get a different dog, I'll wish I had a whippy instead...

Oh gosh, sorry - my friend and her fellow whippet-owners refer to them as whippies, so I picked it up from them. Whippy = whippet (purebred, in this case, not that I'd mind a cross but again, can't find one!)

There is a whippet rescue in WA - can you register with them, and that way have a rescue whippy?

Scuttlebutter, I actually follow the whippet rescue FB page , and yes, I am registered with them.

Tweed, you'd think so, but they really don't seem to come up much. I have been in contact with the organisations that re-home pound dogs here in WA, and I follow their FB feeds and/or websites. There is currently a female whippet cross that I would love to adopt, but it will be a few weeks before I'm in a position to have her, and I bet she'll be gone by then.

Oh it's difficult. My DD (who had had a bad time and been ill for a time) was desperate for a puppy. In the end we relented and now have the most wonderful dog now (golden retriever).
I do feel guilty though, and now that we have become 'doggy' people any subsequent pet we have will be rescue dog.

Our whippets are pretty much the best things in our life (well, apart from the dcs).
They are sweet natured, cosy and beautiful - but I have to admit ours are disobedient. I'm not sure whether their disobedience is our fault, or whether they are known to ignore being called.
