I have lots of shopping to do for our first puppy, I'm so excited. I need to know what to buy now, what to leave till later, products you love, products you hate, everything from bowls to beds! TIA

We have a lab and not sure if whippets needs are different, we love:

Millies wolfheart dog food and treats

Wolters collar and indigo collar tags

Bronten glen vet bed

Kong toys

Kong toys are great.

My whippet puppy was 12 weeks yesterday and had his final jab.

When we first got him I couldn't find a coat small enough. I got a long sleeve fleece pyjama top and cut the sleeve off. The wrist end was the neck part and then I cut two holes for his arms/front legs and then cut along the seam so that the underneath/his whatnots were uncovered. No sewing and kept him warm.

I have bought loads of toys but find he prefers to find other things to play with! I have a gentlemans tweed cap which he loves to play with!

Don't waste money, it can be expensive as they will look at stuff you've bought and ignore it then play with a scarf for ages!

A great tip I got on here was to get a cardboard inner from kitchen roll and put some treats inside and scrunch the ends so that they have or chew it to get to it.

Raised feeding bowls are great for when they are older. Mine now devours his meal in seconds if I let him, so after a few seconds I take the bowl away and then put back or it's gulped down almost in one go!

He sleeps on my bed 99% of the time. I've bought numerous beds and wasted my money as he ignores them, but he will lie down and sleep on a large flat bed I bought from poundstretcher.

I bought a training lead from petsathome which is just a very long webbing strap but it's great to stop him chasing the cat in the garden.

He's on Instagram wallythewhippet if you want to see how much fun he is!

I've only had large breeds before so this is all new to me being a whippet mum! They are very loving, big girls blouses if male and very bright and intelligent.

I wasted loads of money on expensive treats and they gave him diarrhoea. I now use dry cat food as we have a cat as training treats.

I give him Burns dry puppy food with a little bit of James wellbeloved wet puppy food in a sachet and his poos are solid and less frequent than the original petsathome puppy food he was on.

This is the sleeve coat that took me all of a minute to make using just a pair of scissors! I shaped the back in a curve

You can't tell from the photo but he was very small then, about seven weeks.

Ahh sweet Shia.

He'll not be in our bed, upstairs or on sofas - that's the rule for now, we'll see how long it lasts. He'll be 10 weeks when he arrives. I don't expect he'll be cold enough to need a coat - it's pretty warm here. He'll be crate trained - important so we can continue to roam around and stay in other people's houses without becoming bad guests with a destructive puppy.

He's lovely.

I originally bought a soft crate but he bit a hole in it and because he's a skinny minny whippet he wriggled out of it.

Petsathome let me take it back without a receipt and I put it towards a metal crate. Size small is perfect for him.

Keep thinking cage instead of crate - actually just need to think bed...retreat away from the kids. Am excited and terrified by his arrival. Grin

I have this in a small

£65 but as I wanted to take back the soft one which had cost £40 and I didn't have a receipt I had to buy this

www.petsathome.com/shop/en/pets/puppy/puppy-cages-and-playpens/cages/double-door-crate

If you look around you can get it cheaper. Also, look on gumtree as they had some for £20 in my area but I had or get one urgently as I was going out.

Sorry, just trying not to laugh at the no-sofa rule Grin let us know how long that lasts ...

Meant to say we had a no sofa rule too Hmm

I think it's easier to start with a no sofa rule rather than trying to impose it later on. I think my chances are slim - whippets apparently are rather fond of a comfy spot. He comes from a house where they put chairs on the sofa to keep the dogs off - clearly the training didn't work too well there either. Grin
