I have an 11 week old rescue pup who was extremely underweight when he came to us.
He had a bad stomach pretty much as soon as we got him home and from then it varies from almost normal, to extremely soft to liquid.
Our vet took a stool sample and has called to tell me he tested positive for campylobacter. (They are also doing an E Coli test, for which we should get the results tomorrow.)
As advised we took him off the awful kibble the rescue had him on and put him on cooked white fish and/or chicken and he has been on 7/8 meals a day of that plus Canikur paste twice daily for a week now.
His stools are now firm, although perhaps still a little mucousy on the surface and he is full of life and mischief, bright eyed, with a shiny coat.
He's due to see the vet again tomorrow for a check-up and we've agreed to delay his second vaccination until he tests clear. Vet says she has ordered in some antibiotic suspension for him and he'll start that tomorrow as well.
I have read some horrible stories about pups having repeated episodes going on for months, needing repeated courses of antibiotics and ending up with permanent digestive issues. How likely is he to make a good recovery from this and is there anything we can be doing to support his health and help him recover?
Obviously we are being extra careful with hygiene and fortunately I was already doing this, as we didn't know what why he was so thin and considered many of the suspects to be things we needed to be extremely careful around re handling etc.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
