The doghouse

normal dog-dog behaviour?

took WB out in snow today on lead to start but didn't realise neighbour had her girl out aswell. they haven't met before today. neighbour's dog gave a few wee growls when WB was jumping round her and at one point when neighbour's dog was getting a cuddle from me she bared her teeth at WB. apart from the teeth baring i thought the growling was just normal "you're annoying me" behaviour to let WB know to back off. i think because he is still young he doesn't read the more subtle signals, but neighbour seemed really shocked at her own dog. she said she hasn't ever done that before. am i getting doggy behaviour all wrong? btw, i did call WB away when other dog growled.

Was the other dog female? was it possibly coming into season?

My friends dog is soft as shite but she won't tolerate ANY male being around her at the beginning of her season.

yes female, not sure about season or not, will aske neighbour when i see her again. that could explain it.

He's young, he has probably yet to learn doggy manners. Some dogs tolerate poor dog/dog behaviour more than others.

There's nothing wrong with a dog growling or baring it's teeth, it's simply showing it's displeasure.

Agree she was saying "Don't mess with me young whippersnapper, i aint gonna tolerate it" If they see each other more regularly she will be fine him esp as he calms down.

Don't you just wish sometimes we had hackles to rise and could growl at annoying people

My older bitch is 2 and soft as shite
Quiet
But she is very vocal teeth baring and growing Yo presumptuous pups and dogs, even pinning my friends over exuberant puppy dog by the neck to the floor sounding like Cujo.
She is just an alpha female, she made not one Mark on any dog and is now used by many puppy owners locally as a teacher of manners...

This is really interesting reading about dog to dog behaviour and 'rude' dogs and puppies.

He just wants to say hi

WTWTW that is a great link. it really does lay out exactly what is happening in terms even the least dog savvy person can understand.
