10/10 - How Does Your Memory Work?
Memory isn't just the facility to remember facts and lists: it also lets us have a past and a future. If, like John Forbes, your memory circuit has never fully formed, not only can you not remember what has already happened to you, but you also can't imagine events in the future. For Genevieve Smith-Courtois, meanwhile, it's remembering a traumatic experience that's causing her distress. What she needs to do is "tone down" her difficult memories. And of course, as we get older, our memory deteriorates. For 60-year-old John Stevenson, who has Alzheimer's, this means he can't make a single decision or even remember how to get himself a glass of water. Although an undeniably bleak film, this exploration of the human memory is truly absorbing and does have its lighter moments: who wouldn't laugh when Professor Martin Conway struggles to recall a scientific term in his interview?
