doctors to be - 20 years on

the single mother of 4, who started training at 27 and where she is 20 years later.

tons of respect to her, but slightly worrying what she had to say about todays new recruits.

I was mostly fascinated by her teeth.

Good on her, but I can't imagine being that driven, after all that time - I suppose if I was a single mum I'd maybe be more like that, but it seemed sad to see the kids eating a curry in the staff room of the hospital just to snatch soem time with her.

i know i thought that about her teeth too and hair (shame on me). wondered why it took her so long to start training. she must have had her children young.

Watched this on sky plus tonight. She worked damn hard.

Thought it was interesting that she said that being a junior doctor was easier hours/work than being a single mum.

I have been a junior doctor.

For the last week my DH has been away so I have been a 'single' mum to 2.

Junior doctor was easier. Someone came and took the bleep away eventually...

I thought having survived being a junior doc would totally prepare me for the sleep deprivation of motherhood.

It's a shame this series is hidden away on BBC4, though as all the doctors featured have had some interesting things to say about medical training, today's NHS etc.

yesterday's was good too. the dr that went into local practise.

it was really good, it makes you realise how the nhs is run.

in a way though the amount of hours he put in as a junior doctor, on the lowest wage (lower than a porter), i sort of understood why he took the path he did.

And then there are no nights off. No weekends. No thank yous (I did O+G - maybe in other specialties you don't get any either).

Nowadays I would quite like to go back to work for a rest. But medicine is a rubbish place to work.

Oh, I did O&G too. It was shite.

Medicine isn't too bad a place to work if you're a GP retainer doing one day a week, though .

i guess alot of doctors are children of doctors? if not, what makes you want to be one?
