Outlander fans - help with question re S1E1 *POSSIBLE SPOILERS*

I’ve watched the first four seasons of outlander and am rewatching from the start again.

In the v first episode there is the bit where Frank returns to the B&B and sees a highlander (Jamie?) looking up at the window watching Claire in the bathroom.

Other than there being ‘wanted’ type posters issued when the police are trying to find out what happened after claire disappears, this is not mentioned again...

As Jamie hasn’t mentioned this to Claire in Seasons 1-4, was this not him? Or is this a detail that was lost in the tv series? Was it mentioned in the books?

Do we ever find out who the highlander was? If he was real?

I always took it to be an imprint / ghost / apparition rather than something physical that happened in Franks time.. unless they go back to it in the next season of course

Unless I’ve missed it, I don’t think it’s mentioned again in all four series so far...

It's like Claire's Irish accent - only seen in that episode.

It happens in the books too but it hasn't been explained yet.

The author says in the FAQ bit of her website that "The ghost is Jamie–but as for how it fits into the story, All Will Be Explained–in the last book."

I thought that the books started to become a bit repetitive. And rapey. Wasn't there a scene SPOILER where one of the characters is gang-raped and feels a bit sorry for one of the rapist?
