What a beautiful film Smile

Although I did feel sorry for the spurned chap at the end.

I loved it .. just stumbled on it and could’ve really enjoyed a series!
Made me cry

I've read it once, watched it thrice and cried every time. I'm Irish, I live away from Ireland, I really connect with the story and I miss my mammy.

It was just such a pleasant change to watch something so natural.

Yes - loved it. Thought it was sad the mother went to bed instead of one last night with her daughter. Never figured out why the sister died. Really enjoyed it.

I'd never seen it before and missed the start, but I thought it was lovely. The dresses were so beautiful. Ditto Domhnall Gleeson.

Its a beautiful film, prefered it to the book. Soisia Ronin is a very talented actress.

Me too Taczilla. I bawled my eyes out when her she's leaving and her mother can't bear to watch!

Yes I have seen it before but if anything I cried more this time around because I knew what was coming. DH thinks DD and I are just programmed to cry on Sunday evening because of CTM

I loved it, nice film for Sunday night, wish they would put more on like that.

I loved it! I missed the first 30 mins but luckily DH is away on a business trip tonight, so will download it and re-watch the whole thing.

I'm an immigrant too, left a small rural town in Scandinavia in search for a better life(* and adventure. Luckily for me there wasn't a handsome Domnhall Gleeson to keep me back. ( I did feel sorry for DG's character, he was such a good catch in so many ways).

(* When I say better life, I don't mean financially. I had a very good job and comfortable life but ye gods it was dull and the pressure to follow the norm was immense. I swapped my lovely flat to a run down flat share and had a minimum paid catering job but they were amazing years, such a good life experience and we had so much fun.

I really enjoyed it - perfect Sunday night viewing IMO!

Shame it was just a film really.

Saw it at the cinema, so a while ago now, but Saoirse Ronan's performance is breathtakingly good and I thought it was true to the spirit of the book.

It was SO sad that the mother went to bed early instead of spending that last night with her daughter. My take on that was that she was immensely hurt and suffering and, if she'd spent that evening with her, she couldn't have stood the pain, either for herself or for Eilis.

Going to go against the grain...

I thought it was very "meh". Every cliche in the book from the priest to the boarding house owner to the possessive Irish mammy and the huge Italian family eating spaghetti.

I ended fast forwarding through bits as it was just all really tedious. Kept waiting for the drama which never came. Saoirse Ronan is very good but her demure and naive routine never changed....

It was OK. Glad it's not a series and just a one-off.

I didn't think she was demure and naive, but self-possessed, determined and observant.

It has 'drama' in spades, IMO, which comes from character and situation.

I love Brooklyn. Saoirse Ronan can convey so much with just a look, I just find her mesmerising to watch.

So glad she didn’t end up staying in Enniscorthy with Jim with the Lovely House. He was dull, although a great catch for someone else in the town Grin. I was urging her home to Hot Tony!

Had tears in my eyes when she broke the news to her mother that she was in fact married and would be heading back to America. All her mother’s dream just crumbled in that second. One daughter dead and now the other daughter she'd hoped had come home for good was leaving once again. I might have shed a tear.

That would be my take too. We know from the scene where she found Rose's body that the love was certainly there. She wasn't of the generation who could show that kind of emotion to the living however.

Another Irish person living away from home...I bawled my eyes out when the wee man was singing in gaeilge at the Christmas soup kitchen.

Oh and I loved the lighting and cinematography. The colour saturation felt very 'vintage'. And the brief scene at the end where Jim the Good Catch is reading Eilis' letter with the sun shining through the windows and the dust motes twirling about, beautiful.

I didn't think she was really in love with Tony though. It was more gratitude at not being alone anymore (plus a bit of lust!).
She had nothing in common with him, and didn't even open his letters, and when she finally did she struggled to have anything to say to him.
I'm glad she got away from her small town, and think she would have had a decent life with Tony, but I felt like she was very passive all the way through.
(Yes I do know it's not real! )

I quite liked that she didn’t appear to be desperately and passionately in love with Tony. It was refreshing to see. Usually films are about the desperate and passionate love affairs when in fact a lot of relationships aren’t like that. Eilis was a nice steady girl who just found a nice boy that she liked and fancied and married him.

I enjoyed the film but didn't like the book, Eilis had no personality or mind of her own imo. I think Ronan must be a very good actress because she managed to breathe some life into a very dull character,.

I love this film. Much better than Ladybird.
