I really don't want my DD to grow up any more now. This is awful.

It all seems to easy to do. And acceptable by peer groups. It's worrying..worrying to the point of feeling sick.

His justifications are laughable. "I call everyone Babe"

And the tattoos...

It's chilled me to the core. There seems to be a lot of talk of teachers being led astray or making wrong decisions and insinuations that the girls are precocious and more than aware of what they are doing.

I don't like the angle the production team have taken, to be honest.

I agree, Bunnyjo. Lots of victim blaming going on on Twitter, it's grooming, plain and simple. If feelings are that strong that you're sure you are going to be "together forever", put it away until your victim is old enough to know their own mind.

That is exactly what got me, this mildly suggestive insinuation that the girl was leading him on. It makes me angry to think that the narrative could have this tilt. Yet again shifting the blame on the 'victim' of in some way 'bringing it upon themselves'..

This was a load of victim blaming twaddle. As a victim of a predatory teacher in my teens, I think it's fair to say a) it doesn't go on every day b) funny kind of peer group who's accepting of this (only my best friend knew and she really didn't approve!) and c) it's not the bubblegum teen romance soundtracked by Taylor a Swift that this show wanted us to believe. It's a fucking dark place and the "documentary" was offensive beyond sense.

I watched "Sexting Teacher" last night. In the summing up at the end of the show,it was reported that "Gemma " had mouthed the words "sorry" to Jeremy Forrest in the witness box.The male reporter said she was probably saying sorry for sending him to jail. Errr..NO,he sent HIMSELF to jail by having a highly inappropriate and illegal relationship with an underage pupil!??

juneau · 20/02/2014 09:51

I was really surprised by the tone of this and came away feeling they'd portrayed Jeremy Forrest in a very sympathetic light. His marriage was miserable, he was in a dark place, he was a super nice guy, a great teacher, etc. Absolutely no-one was critical of what he'd done and I couldn't believe the lengths to which her friends turned a blind eye or facilitated the relationship. I found it really disturbing TBH. Channel 4 is making some very odd and questionable TV at the moment.

My husband commented on the strange pop sound track seemed to be bigging it up,

the tattoo husband was chilling, his poor wife, a lovely looking woman hope she has done bloody better.

I had a friend who did this with a teaching assistant , separate phones etc, cases suspended on lack of evidence, then lived together from her being 16 onwards :/..he would sometimes try and socialise with us, it was bloody awkward.

Although, in that case the girl did pursue the man but seriously how hard is it to think , poor mixed up kid I'll leave well alone.

I watched this totally agog. As a mum of 2 teen daughters it made me feel sick.

I thought the colleague of Jeremy Forest was a bit too sympathetic and seemed to be making lots of excusues for him.

I am happy that Jeremy Forest got a proper sentence (rather than a mickey mouse 6 month one), hopefully that will deter other teachers from even contemplating this type of behaviour.

She was 15 Nellie (but played by an actress to protect her identity)

Hmmm It's all a bit anomylous though isn't it.A child is fully culpable for every illegal act on his10 th birthday and is assumed to have a clear understanding of right and wrong
Yet a 15 and three quarter yr old is an innocent little flower , a victim led astray!

Report
juneau · 20/02/2014 19:40

I don't think anyone is saying she was an innocent little flower. Her statement said she gave him her verbal consent for everything they did, that she was in love with him, etc.

However, she was a troubled teen with bulimia and divorcing parents, its the law that the age of consent is 16, not 15, and he was a 30-year-old man, in a position of trust, who was quite well aware that he was doing wrong and could go to prison for having a sexual relationship with one of his pupils. There is no grey area here - they were both well aware of the consequences of what they were doing.

NaggingNellie · 21/02/2014 14:09

oh an actress i wondered about that,

Bunnyjo · 21/02/2014 20:53

They (the girl and Jeremy Forest) were both aware of their actions. However, one person in that 'relationship' was a 15yr old girl, under the legal age of consent and with on going difficulties in her life. She was a vulnerable teenager and, whilst she may well have been aware of the legal implications, I very much doubt that she was aware of the long term psychological implications of her actions. The other was a 30 year old man, in a position of trust and fully aware of the legal and moral implications of his actions.

He knowingly broke the law by beginning a relationship with her, having sex with her and then agreeing to flee with her to France. In fact, the only insight I can take from the programme is that it showed his accompanying her to France was not to protect her; it was to protect himself because the police and social services net was fast closing in on them.

Even if the girl threw himself naked at his feet, he could and bloody well should have resisted. There is nothing anomalous about it.

I don't know.
If a 15 yr old egged on someone to commit a crime , he would be guilty of aiding and abetting , so that is kind of anomalous with the 15 yo girls actions I would say.

I cannot believe what some of you are saying. He was her TEACHER. It doesn't make a blind bit of difference if she 'egged him on', it's not 'aiding and abetting' FFS. Teenagers have crushes on teachers all the time (I'm a teacher, I've been there) but there's a reason most teachers don't run away to France when that happens. Because they're not twats.

Seriously!!!?? A teen is a teen. Egging on is what they do on a daily basis, how is that even in the same category as aiding and abetting??!!

A teacher/an adult/a professional in education would/should know how to deal with this behaviour, rather than shift blame on the 'support' the girl gave them!

It was shit TV some of my students were discussing it too..and they were critical of how the characters were depicted...

Right, I promised myself I wouldn't get involved here as when the Jeremy Forrest trial happened I got very pissed off with some of the abuse-apologists on MN. However I am incensed that anyone thinks it's okay to say a child "egged on" an adult.

I am a teacher and I was a student who had a relationship with a teacher. A long one that started when I was underage. I fancied him like mad from the age of 13- he was 27 at that time- however I do not think that my fancying him gave him carte Blanche to start having sex with me! Yes, I did consent. No, I didn't actually have the ability to consent. That's what the age of consent means.

My teacher also knew what he was doing was wrong every step of the way. As the condom was going on the first time we had sex he said he knew he shouldn't be doing it. He did it anyway.

So let's stop this nonsense about girls egging grown men on, shall we? For what it's worth too, no one would ever say that an underage teenage boy "egged on" a female teacher. This seems to be a special kind of phrase only used when it's adult men involved in the abuse of children.

MissyO, do you have a daughter? Would your reaction be the same if this was your daughter?

If a 15 yr old egged on someone to commit a crime , he would be guilty of aiding and abetting , so that is kind of anomalous with the 15 yo girls actions I would say.

The crucial point you appear to be missing is that the girl was the victim in this crime, there was no other 3rd party victim as such; therefore your analogy is inaccurate. If the 15 year old was egging an adult on to beat him/herself up, then no I very much doubt the teenager would be charged with aiding and abetting. I do, however, believe the adult would be charged with assault/ABH/GBH depending on the severity of the injuries.
