Hi everyone, hope you're all well and enjoying the summer holls?
I wonder if any of you could give me some advice. My daughter has extremely bad heavy period and pain. She'll flood a super tampon in 40 mins on the heavy days. A last minute trip has come up on Monday and it's a once in a lifetime experience. We've been to the drs and asked for the period delay pill but she won't prescribe it to her! Dd was in tears in the drs room and ever since. Dd said if she doesn't get the period delay pill she won't go on this trip, which is understandable as her periods are completely debilitating. Doctor won't give it to her because she thinks it will affect her in the long term??? DD started about 6 months ago and doctor says she hasn't had enough periods for her to be given the delay pill yet. The trip is on Monday so don't really know what to do, we only found out we could go yesterday. Do you think I should call 111 tomorrow and ask for advice? 111 might refer us to out if hours dr and at least it would be a second opinion. Or do any of you have any tips with coping with periods on a beach type holiday?Dd is 15. Thank you xx

I think you can buy them in boots or online, not sure of the detail, or if they're suitable or not for your DD but worth knowing/researching

What's the opportunity? Sounds exciting!

I've seen you can buy them on Superdrug online, just a bit hesitant if the dr was so reluctant!!! Erghh everything is so complicatedGrin it's a trip to the Bahamas! Thank you for replying, I really appreciate it x

Hmm, sounds like the doctor you saw was not really very sympathetic. This wont' help for this incident, but may I recommend Tranxeamic Acid tablets. I took them as a teenager as I got it really bad and they really do make a difference, 1 or 2, three times a day if I recall. But again, you may need a prescription but maybe ask specifically to see a different GP next time.

When I was between about 13 and 16 I used them quite a lot for holidays etc as my periods were horrendous. The GP was fine with me using them at that age. Can you see another GP, or how about Push Doctor (I've no idea how it works but I think they can prescribe things). I would keep trying.

My GP has prescribed them for both DDs 17 and 15. Ask for a different GP and explain the predicament. If it's occasional e.g. for holidays, exams etc. should be fine. You can get them online, but I am not sure if that's sensible for the first time.

My daughter is fifteen and a half and has been prescribed norethisterone a couple of times, for school trips and most recently a beach holiday. I also think you can buy tranxeamic acid tablets over the counter which would make her periods lighter. Obviously best to get medical advice.

PS they're only effective if taken correctly - 3 times a day regular intervals. If your DD isn't good at remembering, then her period will come on....

I would just buy it, it's nonsense that it would affect your dd long time. My 12 year old has used them twice.

My DD was prescribed these at age 12 for our summer holiday by the GP. See a different GP.

Thank you for all your replies. I think I may go to out of hours dr tomorrow as it's Saturday! Dr didn't want to prescribe tranxeamic acid either. Dd was crying and she just said 'well there's nothing I can do'. really do appreciate the replies xx

Just so you know you have to start taking it a few days before the period is due and then three times a day. Period starts approx 2-3 days after stopping taking them.

I hope someone can help you out with this. That sounds like such an awful situation and seriously how unsympathetic do GPs get fgs!

Grr, there was something she could do and she chose not to do it. I'd definitely seek out a different doctor when you book in at the surgery going forward.

Probably not enough time now for period delay progesterone to work but they could have given you some tranexamic acid and or progesterone to help period for trip . Age is no barrier .
Advice different GP , family planning clinics usually have staff / doctors more highly trained re these problems or a private gynaecologist . Going forwards period problems in teens are common and suffering is simply not on or necessary . Good luck and xx for your DD .

Be aware that like all drugs it may not work for her, although I hope it does. Manage expectations.

She needs longer term treatment. And there's no such thing as once in a lifetime experience.
