Waiting up for teenagers

Does anyone else stay awake until ridiculous times waiting for teenagers to come home? How do you manage? And if you don't wait up do you not worry something happens to them and you don't know anything until you wake up in the morning and they're not there?

Whenever I've gone to bed I've put my phone on vibrate instead of silent, which is enough to wake me up if there were an emergency.

I know what you mean though!!

Kind of. I sometimes lie on the sofa with a little blanket over me and the tv on. Sometimes I take my phone to bed.

How old are your teenagers OP?

If they're old enough to be put after your bedtime then no, I wouldn't stay up. I can't give up sleep without good reason.

My phones beside me and I do usually wake when the door opens. If I wake at any point and haven't heard them I'll check in there rooms.

If you've asked them to come back by 1am, then you could put an alarm clock outside your room and set it for 1am, then when they get home they have to turn the alarm off.

I don't do this because it would wake the younger three children, but some of my friends do.

I used to wait up when he was first going out in the evenings, but these days I just go to bed and leave my phone on in case there's a problem. He's 16.

I go to bed and leave the hall light on. If I awake and it is off I know DS is in. If I wake and it is still on I check the time and doze (or text him like mad) until he gets home. Only once have I not heard him come home - I tend to sleep lightly if he is out.
My hall light plan will go out of the window soon as second DS is starting to go out later! Drat!

Because of where we live if DD is out late either I will be picking her up or another parent will be bringing her back. So far it hasn't been ridiculously late so the answer to the question is I don't know.

My teenagers are 17 and 18 - I think I need to relax I'm just terrified something really awful happens!

But whether you wait up or not the thing will or will not happen. your being awake won't change what happens. If your teenagers are sensible, mature young adults you can sleep peacefully with your phone beside you for the very unlikely event that they need you.

I find it hard to sleep if I'm expecting ds1 back.

We are rural and the other two can't drive yet so we either have to get them or they stay over at a friends.

I do, but mainly so I can enjoy a debrief of his night with a nice mug of coffee. When he starts to get fed up of this, I think I will just leave him to it.

No. soon they are likely to be living away from home so you won't know when / if they come in at all.
My reckoning is if they are old enough to be out at that time of night, then they are old enough to get themselves in.

If there were an emergency they know to call the house phone which would wake sleeping people, other than that, I need my sleep!

depthvaries we make sure both Ds's bedroom doors are open when we go to bed. If the doors are shut in the morning, they're in. It saves on electricity for those nights they don't comd home
