Me & DH have just discovered our hamster has died. We were just talking how we haven't seen him all day. He was a Russian dwarf & we had him for 18 months. The kids are in bed & we've decided not to tell them til after school tomorrow. We both cried & how ironic that I popped out this afternoon & bought a bag of hamster food.

I'm 98% sure he's not hibernating - it's got to of been the warmest day of the year so far? He felt stiff-ish. But there's that 2% that thinks what if he is! I held him for a little while, I guess I was hoping he'd wake up. Going miss him. Dreading telling the kids.

I'm sorry for your loss. :'( I sat with mine in front of the fire, on a warm hot water bottle (not directly) just to be sure. if it's hibernating it should come round within about 20 or 30 mins. If not then it's probably passed I'm sorry.

Yeah, he definitely passed. We waited until the kids got in from school yesterday (the smell was another sign) they initally took it well, they're a bit older at 13 & 8. It wasn't until we buried him that they got upset. We're all upset, I kind of knew for a few weeks that he didn't have long but then again I thought maybe we'd have him a bit longer. Or I just wished. It's very strange not sitting here not having him next to me in his cage :(

Aww, sorry for your loss. We lost our Syrian hamster last week. He was over 2 so did well. One minute he was in his wheel, the next he was dead. That quick.
Took him out, gave him hugs, kids held him so they could say bye, then we buried him.
Still missing him, amazing how fond you become of the wee souls.
Part of the family!

I'm so sorry to hear this. We've had 2 hamsters and have been very upset when they died. They are great company.

Take care.

Thank you all, it is very sad when you lose a pet, you become so attached.

DH said we could get another hamster after our holiday, but I don't want to, it won't be the same. DH is actually quite upset too, he couldn't bring himself to say goodbye, although he was with us when we buried him.

I know exactly how you feel. Our last one died 18 months ago and I can't face getting another. I'm a sad case 😂😂😂😂

A hamster?

Really?

In what way are they great company? I'm genuinely interested.

I am sorry you lost your pet but as a 21st century human, I find the level of your angst at the death of a rodent a bit... odd.

Tansie, are you sure you're human? Because even a rodent wouldn't be that spiteful. I guess you're enquiring about a Hamster's ability at keeping one's company, as I can only assume you must lack it, giving your personality.

@Tansie it sounds to me like the hamster would be better company than you.

@Tansie1 mean and unnecessary, why bother posting. For what it’s worth I find your lack of empathy a bit.. odd

It’s amazing how much personality these little creatures have and how attached you get to them. It’s been a long time since I had hamsters but I remember how much I loved them.

How rude of you Tansie. It doesn’t matter how big or small a pet is. A pet is a pet and losing one is always devastating.

I don't think Tandie realises that she's in the small pet section.
Sorry for your loss - We were upset when we lost our little hamster a couple of years ago and we still talk about him. DD would love love to get another, but we have a cat now (who has a mouse fetish and I don't think they'd get on well together.

I'm really sorry for the offence I caused. I genuinely hadn't spotted on my teensie iPhone 5's screen that this was a specific forum about small pets, and therefore misunderstood their value therein.

Our hamsters used to Poole around in their balls when we watched TV in the evening, ask to come out into ball if not already out etc etc Good company in a low key way. Ours were boys and very obsessive - did lots of funny things. Really miss them when get hone in the evening. ......

He would love to go in his ball, he also use to have free reign too though, he was quite safe in the lounge, he had a favourite corner he'd run to behind the ironing basket (ha ha, as if it ever gets done really!) we'd always find a pile of sunflower seed cases there! He love to have snuggles too, run up my arm, come to 'kiss' my cheek, then nuzzle in my ear, then sit on my shoulders for what would seem like ages to clean himself, watch tv, he'd be quite happy sitting there! Hamsters are great pets & they really do have great little personalities!

I'm sorry, my little one is sick too. I don't think @Tansie1 meant to be nasty. They are good company Tansie1. They bond with you strongly and come out to cuddle with you when they hear your voice. They're not a tie as they can be left alone for days out where a cat or dog can't be but they have strong personalities and are very intelligent. It's very entertaining watching them play.
