Just found out my hamster has died :(

My lovely little hamster has died and I'm really upset. She was only 6 months old!

I walked past her cage and spotted something white behind her wheel (a free standing one) and assumed it was some bedding. I walked past again later and spotted her little feet.

She's laid on her back behind her wheel, I assume she was climbing on the roof of her cage and has fallen and hurt herself and died. That would be why she's laid on her back wouldn't it?

I noticed she was very quiet last night but never spotted her behind the wheel, I assumed she was sleeping because sometimes she would get up later.

I had a good sob and showed 2yo DS and explained to him the best I could. His first response was "will we get a new hamster?", then I said maybe (no) and he said "I want this one best" then I had another sob. He wants to know why grandad is going to take her away, I'm too much of a wuss to move her myself so I've covered her cage with a sheet so I can't see in. DS loved her and used to show her all his toys!

What a rubbish start to the day! I will miss my little hamster :(

Sorry your hamster has died. I'm afraid they tend to do that quite suddenly, but it's still a shock. Please don't assume that she fell and hurt herself just because you found her on her back. She probably just lay down and rolled over that way. Hamsters are fairly resilient and the distance she could have fallen in her cage wouldn't be enough to cause a serious injury.

I am so sorry :(

I have had hammies around all my life and have owned a lot myself. I have found that if they are going to die young 6 months seems to be when it happens and they are often found on their backs so don't assume she hurt herself and died from that, the likelihood is she just lay down and drifted off. There was nothing you could have done, and I am sure she had a happy life with you.

Bless your little son as well, my cousin was 2ish when our grandfather died and one of the first things he asked was if we could go to the 'Grandad shop' because he missed Grandad and wanted another, luckily our grandmother did not hear it but I think that that is simply how very young children process these things.

So sorry Flowers but yes, don't assume she fell - my hamsters would fall all the time! I never found an injury on them. Also, I'm sure I found one on its back Sad they just roll like that, I think...
