Too old to get my ears pierced?

Please talk me out of it! Or not - gimme some good reasons!!

I have never been brave enough to get my ears pierced, but now I'm considering it - at 40! I've had my hair cut quite short recently and reckon dangly sparkly lovely earrings will soften my look a bit/ make me look feminine (barf- that sounds like my mother!).

Where would one go for such a 'procedure'?

My mum got hers done at 40.
I got mine done at 16 which is years ago, I just went to our local chemist. They have the proper gold studs and they sell surgical spirit . You don't want to do it with cheap nasty studs or you might run the risk of getting an infection or allergy.

claire's do ears and then clean every day with surgical spirit to stop infections.

No it doesn't hurt, get your two nails and pinch the skin hardish on the other hand - thats about twice what it feels like.

go to a piercing studio and have it done with a needle

No, it really doesn't hurt - maybe for about a second but that's it. Clipons hurt a heck of a lot more!
Go for it. A whole world of sparkly loveliness will open up for you .

Go for it! A friend's DD had hers done at House of Fraser and friend was very impressed with them. Am taking DD there next year to have hers done.

Thanks, all! Sounds positive all round - even DH said he had nothing much against it, so I'm all out of excuses!!

Bettymum - I tried clip-ons and have some lovely ones, but boy oh boy do they hurt!!

I had mine done at 32 ish..just cause i fancied wearing hoop earings..was fine ..had them done at claires didnt hurt much..well on the scale of childbirth it was painless!!

I must admit, after having mine done at 13 I did think this was rather late in the day ...

It's easy, doesn't hurt too much even with the gun thing. If you think you might be wimpish then ask them to get two guns and two assistants and do both at once!

Remember to clean them every day!

When my mum had her ears pierced in her 40s, the piercing made a most revolting, loud, CRUNCH noise. Apparently that's the result of wearing tight clip-on earings for 20 years!

House of Fraser are good.

Lots of people say you should have it done with a needle but honestly I found it more painful that way than having them pierced with a gun (have had lots of ear piercings!).

Don't go to Claires.

Ask for solid gold earrings not plated gold earrings. You have to wear them for 6-8 weeks so chose some you are ok with wearing for that length of time. If you go to a proper piercing place you may have more choice of metals, titanium etc.

Once you have had them done you need to wear earrings reasonably frequently for a year or so or else they will heal up.

They're not really guns you know, more like staplers, but loaded with earrings instead of staples.

I got my ears pierced when I was 30 in House of Fraser. Didn't hurt at all, just a sort of thud sensation and then numbness. No problems afterwards. Am happy with vast earring collection which was denoed me during my teens by hyper-strict mother.

I didn't get time yesterday, but may wander downtown late afternoon today to look for a piercing studio.

I've been spotting lovely earrings in jewellers' windows so it is still All Systems Go!

My gran got hers done when I got mine first perced 17 years ago so she would have been 70 then she seen mine thought it looked nice and she had always fancied it so she went for it, my mum got a 2nd set pierced the same day and she was 43 at the time.

Finally I'm the proud owner of two holes in my earlobes (one each - baby steps!!) - and it didn't hurt one little bit!

One tiny concern is that the nice man in the jewellery store got ME to tell HIM where to put the piercing. What do I know?! I hope they're in the same position for both ears, but hopefully no-one will notice if not!!

Now I have to wear these studs for 6 weeks, and then I can push the boat out and start wearing fabulous dangly sparkly jewels, dahlings!
