Hair colour virgin (sort of)

I have only ever dyed my hair using box dye. This is mainly to cover the greys (not welcome as I'm only late 20s)

I am thinking about getting my hair done at a salon but I really have no idea about what it all means and I don't want to look like an idiot! T highlights, half head highlights, full head, balayage, global colour..... it's all a foreign language to me.

My hair is very dark and I think I would like to have some light highlights, but not too light. What would I need to have done to get this? Is this easily done on dark hair? And do they give me colour charts to pick the colour or something?

They might need to put bleech in to lighten stuff depending on how dark you are but I have mid brown hair with blond highlights so it’s easily done. You could explain you’d like to look at a colour chart on the phone when booking (although any salon worth their salt should give you one anyway). You also might need to explain you’ve not had it dyed at that salon so that they can do a patch test. Mine first established my main base colour and used that matched colour on my routes then showed me complimentary tones in honey, blond and copper ( you might want to think a about what you are wanting between those). As for full head etc just tell them in layman’s terms and if you have a photo that illustrates your point even better.
