Why is my hair growing back in curly?

Nearly two years ago I had bariatric surgery and lost a lot of weight very quickly. As a result a lot of my hair fell out and it went from very thick to very thin.

Fortunately a lot of it has been growing back and I now have a lot of new growth at the underneath of my hair. However it's growing in curly! I've always had completely pin straight hair that would never hold a curl.

At first I thought it was just because it was short but now some of it is brushing the nape of my neck and it's still curly. So now I look like I've tried to straighten my hair but been really lazy and only straightened the top half of it.

I've just cut it all off to above my shoulders as a) the ends were looking really thin and splitting halfway up the shaft, and b) if I tied my hair up the new short bits would escape and I looked like Macca Pacca with a perm.

Can anyone shed some light on why this has happened? Is it always going to be curly? Am I destined to just look ridiculous now unless I style my hair? I wish it was all curly like the new growth!

It happened to me due to chemo. My hairdresser told me that the hair had to regrow from the roots and had to 'screwdriver' through the scalp which resulted in curly hair! 5 years later it is poker straight again thank goodness!

Oh interesting that it was only relatively temporary for you! I wouldn't mind I think if it was all of my hair but the half and half just looks really odd.
