Can you use a demi over permanent hair colour ?

I got married at Christmas and went to a salon to get my hair coloured. I had wanted demi permanent as I didn't want an obvious root regrowth and only have a little grey( 10 percent or less). I let myself be talked into a permanent colour, vibrant violet toned dark red. It looked lovely but I know have very obvious regrowth. My natural colour is very ash brown with no warmth and the red colour has hardly faded at roots. I went to hairdresser for consultation and asked if I could have a demi permanent so that going forward I wouldn't have as much upkeep and obvious root growth. She said it would be good to do that as I've had a permanent colour now and have to continue with it otherwise I would get banding where current root regrowth is. Can anyone advise me please ? I will try and post a photo

It's quite a dark day today this doesn't really show how vibrant the red colour is.

I meant to say hairdresser said it wouldn't be good to do that.

With a demi there is a risk of banding as it will fade more each time. If you wanted a demi last time that is what the hairdresser should have given you. Are you wanting the same colour or something different?

I want it a less vibrant/violet red and more natural red brown. As think that will be easier to maintain. I think the hairdresser was concerned it wouldn't cover the grey but I did say I wasn't particularly bothered as long as it blended the grey in and made it less noticeable. I'm not sure she quite got that as obviously a lot of people dont want any grey to show at all. I colour my hair as I hate my natural colour.

@numberonecook would it cause banding to put it over this permanent colour now ? I think this is what she meant. Are you saying you would get banding with a demi if you reapplied too frequently?

No a Demi may not cover all your greys and it’s hard to say what % it would cover.

The banding May occur between your root (natural hair colour) and where the perm colour is on the ends so you may end up with a line iyswim. It may grab a little more on the ends and not fade like the top and your end up with the red/brown on the top and a different colour (probs darker) on the bottom.

Ask her to do a strand test and have a look but I’d be concerned after it’s been washed.

Is stripping the colour you have on already an option?

Hi yes I get what you mean. Quite honestly im amazed the colour has lasted so long as my hair usually fades very quickly. I can't use a shampoo for coloured hair(I've tried loads) as they are generally moisturising and my hair is very greasy. I guess it's an option to strip it but wouldn't want to do anything to damage condition further as its long. I've used a colour remover by Sasson before called magic off which is basically vitamin C and castor oil it is supposed to get build up and/or last colour applied out of it out but obviously not like ColorB4 or similar. I think though that would still leave a line wouldn't it because it will leave the hair that's been dyed lighter due to peroxide. I suppose the other thing to do is to wait until it fades a bit , this has been six weeks though and it hasnt budged! I actually like the colour the rest of my hair is it's just the roots being so bright and the contrast /upkeep. Really wish I'd stuck to my guns about the demi 😕
